Lots of good info, thank you guys. Ironically my roosters have been trying to mate the turkey jakes and Jennie’s, at least they did at first but I think they figured it out.
Well I guess I have my work cut out for me building some more enclosures here in the fall, or parting with the...
Really, i was under the impression they could cohabitate just fine? Are you saying the Toms will fight the chickens? They’ve been living together for about a month now without issues but they are all still jeuveniles..
So I’ve had plenty of chickens but decided to try out turkeys; I recently picked up 11 turkeys (7 jakes, 4 Jennies). They get along good with the chickens, and from what I’ve read they apparently learn a bit from the chickens...
Only thing i’m Worried about is the jakes/toms fighting in the...
We had a Rhode Island Red rooster, Jack, who was always fine around me, but he would attack my wife, sister, niece, dogs etc. He ended up in the oven; just wasn’t worth a kid/dog losing an eye... I have a couple now a bielefelder and an americauna cockerel, 6months old. No signs of human...
Welcome to BYC. Chickens are fun to have around. This website is a great resource for information. Don’t worry if a thread has already been started about a topic, just start a new one and ask away. Lots of friendly folks with a lot of knowledge.
I was curious about this topic too. We have the room to start having a self propagating flock so I was hoping for a broody hen soon; BUT we just switched over to a group style roll away nest box (cleaner eggs, easy collecting) so i wonder if this is discouraging broodiness... I’m debating on...
They should be just fine with pine shavings. Its the cedar one’s you don’t want to use; the oil is poisonous to chics. You can use your fleece but you’re going to be throwing fleeces away every couple days which may get a little pricey; whereas pine shavings are pretty cheap...
Oregon, not sure what they will look like after treatment. It was a pretty stressful de-loosing episode for 26 chickens today so i’m Going to give them a full 7 days before messing with them again; but i will try to post up with my findings at that point...
Thanks Kiki, the last article is the best advice; no withdrawal but wash the eggs. This makes the most sense, since they will be setting on the eggs with the permethrin feathers and also that i sprayed the egg boxes. I will probably wash all eggs for now until about 7 days after the last...
Yeah, it seems like most official sources say no egg withdrawal; the only time i see an egg withdrawal recommendation seems to be on a forum or something. It would make sense that there isn’t one; it is just a topical spray that kills external parasites. Not to mention, permethrin is in human...
So I found what i’m Pretty sure are lice eggs and some lice around the vents of a few of my chickens. Treated them today with spray on permethrin, sprayed all around the bird (except for the head) with attention to the vent and under the wings. Also treated the coop/run.
What time frame do...
Well, unfortunately by the time I got home from my trip the sick hen was really bad off so I had to put her down.
I inspected several of my other hens, some have no signs of any issues but a couple have what look like lice eggs, and mites (pics below). Would you all agree the 1st pic is lice...
