Found a small-to-medium sized black snake in our coop that had just eaten an egg... eww!!! It was easy to catch but then it spit out the whole egg in the bag we were using for transfer (ick!) We then released it, but now I'm thinking we may not have taken it far enough away. Any thoughts on...
That looks like an incredibly large roundworm for a chick. I'm pretty sure that roundworms can transfer into the eggs, and therefore the chicks may have them. But I'm no expert. We just lost 4 chicks to roundworms, our first infestation and we are trying to figure these nasty things out...
We've had several hens with horrific head wounds from predators that have recovered (and have taken days to be able to walk), and we just had a chick that was nearly pecked to death (2 others didn't make it) by a nasty mother hen. She couldn't lift her head the first night because the back of...
Thanks for all the great advice - love the mirror idea!
I tried to convince my DH that we should bring the chickens inside during this cold snap (we have 4) - to give the little guy some clucking/soothing sounds nearby... or at least one hen that was broody before the cold kicked in... he wasn't...
Thanks - yes, was thinking of bringing the broody hen inside to stay with the chick inside the brooder - since it is supposed to get to 10 degrees tonight!
Hi there - new to this incubator thing. (When I was little and we had chickens - we just let the hens do their thing when it came to hatching chicks.)
We just got some chickens for the first time this fall and attempted hatching a few eggs that unexpectedly showed up in our hen house...
2nd chick didn't make it... wasn't seeing movement - so I took it out of the incubator, wiggled its beak and it isn't moving...
We only have one chick - I'm wondering how it will do in socialization when we put it with the hens???
Any thoughts on when/how to put it with in the coop with our 3...
Thanks! I checked this morning - the humidity dropped again to 40% (garr!) and the 2nd chick isn't moving... didn't get through the egg anymore overnight <sigh>. I took the first chick out and put him in the brooder and added some water, just in case.
Hello! Very excited to be a part of this great forum!
I'm a newbie to the incubator thing. I grew up on a "hobby farm" and we just let the chickens do their thing when it came to hatching chicks. We just moved to the country this summer and got chickens in the fall. They weren't laying...
