Incubator for Solar Powered/Off Grid home... It works!

And 7 years later here I am struggling like crazy with an incubator on an off grid system. Sounds like the inverters aren't all the same. And they mess up with the thermostat somehow. This is all beyond me and I think I screwed up the end of the hatching... :(

Can't get the right temperature and they should start hatching tomorrow

It stayed there for about 4 hours. The t°gage said it cooled of by 0.5°C during transport. All night I was able to keep the t° around 38°, which involved me getting up every 45 minutes. I haven't been able to lower the temperature. I lowered the settibg but the unit ignores it. It is currently...

I set it at 37.7°C and it keeps on warming it up to 39°. Spent the last 4 hours trying to maintain a decent t° buy I need to sleep! It's the...

Introducing chickens to an existing garden with toxic plants

If you can find some big flat rocks, you can put them around your plants. This is how the ones that are not edible survided here. They also like to go for the young ones. So maybe a super temporary fence while the plants get some strenght would make a difference. If you put your herbs in your...

Official BYC Poll: How do you keep your flock warm in the winter?

I put a blue jug of hot water in a cardboard box when the t° is around -40° outside. And I bank the coop. The coldest so far was -13°C inside. I live off grid in the North (central Yukon)

    Coop up or down?

My opinion is that the temperature wouldn't fluctuate as much if the coop was sitting on the ground.

Is my rooster becoming too comfortable with me?

Our roostet was super friendly with us and still did a good job with his ladies. He ran to me for treats, then would cluck to call thehens and empty my hand andd give it to the hens. One day he attacked me ( I started butchering the meat birds and I keep meat birs and layers together during the...

Need cheap and easy ideas for a large run

There are lots of dogs in my neirborhood, and the owners weren't responsible and somehow the dogs always escaped. When I got my first chickens I asked the C.O. what was my right in case a dog was to come and injure or kill a chicken and they told me I could legally shoot it. (We are hunters) I...

    Free rangers, a question

Never found a single egg out of the coop. They would always come back to lay in the nest box, even if they were on the opposite side of the house. My sister rarely lets hers out and usually has to look for the egg. So I guess it's not concrete science...

    Heating off-grid chicken coop

Glad to read about this old ish post! We'll be flying in our winter cabin in the fall and for the first time my chickens will be coming! They'll live in the shop ( under the bedroom) while my partner builds a log coop. For the roofing it will be planks and I'll find a lot of moss and other thing...
