Can't get the right temperature and they should start hatching tomorrow

Hello all!
A friend of mine went on holidays and he brought me his brooder today. Chicks should start hatching tomorrow.
I can't get the temperatute right. I set it at 37.7°C and it keeps on warming it up to 39°. Spent the last 4 hours trying to maintain a decent t° buy I need to sleep!
It's the hhd for 12 eggs. He never had any problem with it. He put a hot water bottle over it for the move (1/2h drive). Could it had fry something in there?
But most important: what can I do? Right now with a wedge the t° sits at 38.3°C. Can I leave it like that?

How long have you left it at those temps? Does it eventually even out?

I ask because I have one that when I set cold eggs in it goes above the set temperature. I called the vendor and asked them what was going on and let them know my unit was possibly defective. They said if the eggs are below temperature, it will heat a bit above to bring them up to temperature and to let it rest a bit and check back (as long as it wasn't going higher than a few degrees above). I did so and the temperature returned to normal once the eggs were warmed up. It could be that they cooled a bit on the trip and it's working to bring them back up to temperature?

If not, are you able to lower the set temperature a bit?

It stayed there for about 4 hours. The t°gage said it cooled of by 0.5°C during transport. All night I was able to keep the t° around 38°, which involved me getting up every 45 minutes. I haven't been able to lower the temperature. I lowered the settibg but the unit ignores it. It is currently by the wood stove, unpluged with a good t°. I turn it on once in a while to the fan works.

That's good that you're keeping it below the 38 range. I usually drop the temperature a half a degree for hatching anyway. Hope the hatch goes well! It was brave of him to move them mid-incubation.
