Topic of the Week - Fly Strike

Last year one of my White Rock Hens (3 years old at the time) had a wound on her rear end just outside her vent. I make a point to check my girls regularly for poopy butts and rinse them in my kitchen sink. Well this particular hen never liked handling and worked hard to hide from me but this...

Hen continues to lay soft shell eggs - what's wrong ?

that chicken wound up responding to oyster shell and laid a few shelled eggs but then stopped altogether... oddly enough i have a buff orpington (one of two) that is bullied and i think the stress is causing her to lay soft eggs.... she also laid a "lash egg" which is a series of malformed...

Why is my leghorn now laying wrinkled eggs

The chicken that was having difficulties laying was found to have egg yolk peritonitis. You wouldn't know to look at her but Dolores was really quite ill. I looked into having a hysterectomy on her before this diagnosis. 2 weeks before her passing she was taking hours to lay a rubber egg. A few...

Why is my leghorn now laying wrinkled eggs

Good news.... for the last 3 days my Dolores has been laying smaller, normal eggs with slightly thicker shells. thanks to your suggestion i have added kelp to their food. I hand feed Dolores eggshell to make sure she's getting enough to eat. I still say she's getting bullied or is too shy to...

Why is my leghorn now laying wrinkled eggs

Oh man. Today is the second day Dolores has had egg shells for dessert. I did pick up some sea kelp and all the chickens are getting a sprinkle in their food. So this morning I had 3 white eggs. Dolores had less scarring or "body checking" one member called it. it was still a thinner shell than...

Not even sure where to post this -- post-attack chicken trauma?

since you will probably not sleep well, just check on her. no need to disturb her, just let her hear you breathe. if she is okay with being picked up like mine was they do like to lay on your chest and relax to your breathing. i would just worry about her state and sense of fear with all that...

Why is my leghorn now laying wrinkled eggs

oh and yes... i have seen little wrinkles on the ends of some eggs. the eggs i worry about have a Harry Potter kind of thunderbolt in the middle... about 1 inch wide, stands up from the egg by about 1/16th of an inch and is ziggy zaggy. every egg comes out this way... been happening since the...

Why is my leghorn now laying wrinkled eggs

ooh. no feeding my chickens earth worms.... i never realized since the dig some up on their own whilst in the yard grazing. i will check my chickens poop for worms tomorrow. i do not see the girls eating the oyster shells. i will be pulverizing the shells into smaller pieces. i surely do think...

dang. me again. if it were me, i'd bring my girl inside until i had new pals for her. even if it took a week or longer. just be sure to have her drink and have lots of towels to keep her bedding clean. you have work to do.

Not even sure where to post this -- post-attack chicken trauma?

We lost a chicken to a hawk. I know how sensitive chickens are and this attack happened OUTSIDE their coop. Personally I would bring your chick inside and keep her comfortable. She's as much in shock as you are. I have brought chickens inside, used a laundry basket and had a long cookie sheet on...

    eggbound chickens

I noticed one of my liveliest girls was falling asleep standing up one day. she was not herself. She had yet to lay an egg that day so i took a look around back and she had pushed out part of a soft white egg ... real stringy... i pulled it the rest of the way out and she felt better. another...

Brooklyn girl now raising chickens in Wisconsin

Hey all. A year ago my husband and I built a chicken coop in the courtyard of our farmstead. We decided on 6 chicks for the size of the coop and the number of eggs we could handle a week. Three White Rocks and three Leghorns. We lost one White Rock, our biggest at around 8 pounds, to a hawk. All...
