I have a very simple (and probably very silly) question! I was just wondering if it was possible to breed bantams and standards together, and what size chickens they would produce? I'm not interested in breeding birds, I'm just curious :)
(Also sorry if this is the wrong category! I wasn't...
Also, one more thing, behavior is probably one of the least reliable methods to determining gender, besides old wive's tales. I have had very shy cockerels and very gregarious pullets!
I've had pullets with thicker legs, and shorter, stumpier tails, and roosters with fuller feathering, etc; in the end, most of these are not absolute certainties. Even combs and wattles, which in my opinion are the most reliable sign, may not give you a guaranteed result. But I'd rather depend...
It's alright! Yes, they will grow feathers in the areas where hackle/saddle/sickle feathers will eventually appear, but for now they won't tell you anything. But, I've heard somewhere that cockerels grow their feathers more slowly, which might lend to the idea that a thinner ridge means a...
I noticed that on your blog you were pointing out hackle feathers and sickle tail feathers; I'm sure that those feathers do not appear at that age, as they are adult feathers and these lil guys are still chicks who are growing out their first juvenile feathers! And I've never heard of "ridge"...
Also noticed that as they were sleeping, they have their necks sort of stretched out instead of tucked in... is that unusual or do chickens do that when they're sleeping on the floor?
Just came home today and found out my mom and a bunch of other people have been working on the yard, including chainsawing the heck out of trees, breaking branches, digging, talking, etc...
I'm extremely worried about stress because I had bought new 2 month old easter eggers literally just the...
Well, Pepe died today.
We'll probably bury her tomorrow morning in her favorite spot.
Thank you all for helping me out through all of this, it means so much to me.
I don't know of any vets yet; I'm going to do some research for any that could be in my area. I tried moving her neck, but she would just twist it back into this strange position.
I'll try to buy some baby aspirin and antibiotic tomorrow.
She looks a lot worse today. Pepe opened her eyes momentarily (one of her eyes, on the side with her injury, looks white and maybe she lost an eye) while I was taking her out of the cage to clean it, and she flapped her wings around a little. But I think she's in pain; she was writhing around...
Pepe is the injured one, and Cashew was the one killed this morning. I'll send pictures of Pepe in a second. She makes a nibbling motion with her mouth when I try to feed and water her, but idk how much of it she actually takes in
