Big thanks to everyone who commented. Indeed, we were very lucky. After a year of successfully keeping them alive in the suburban backyard environment, I thought I had my bases covered and there is nothing to worry about. Well, It seems like you can never let your guard down and there is always...
Almost one year to the day I got them (when they were only 6 weeks old) I had my first predator attack last night.
Both of my buff orpingtons go to the coop for the night and I lock them every night before bedtime. Almost every night, the coop remains open for few hours after the ladies settle...
Updating this thread after a long silence. She is back to normal in terms of behavior, with two exceptions. One, the color of the comb is still not quite there (when compared with the other one); and two, there are no eggs. Not sure what to think of her, really, I have noticed at some point that...
Hello,
One of my 10 month old Buff Orpingtons appears a bit 'under the weather'. Symptoms first appeared on Sunday:
- pale comb
- generally slow to move about, lethargic almost
Yesterday I notice she is not able to produce the usual cluck, cluck, cluck, CLUCKAAAAAWWWWK! sound. Did not lay...
Posting here first, let me know if I should also post in Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures forum.

Came home from work today and quickly noticed my laying hen had something happen to her comb. Upon further inspection I noticed blood splatter in the coop. She is fine, I think, acted fine when roaming the backyard later during the day. Not sure what really happed, however, I hope this is not...
Thank you everyone! She is about 22 weeks, give or take few days. Today was another day with an egg in the nest; this makes it three in the row! Amazing!
She should be almost 22 weeks old, give or take few days. I have another one who is either maturing a bit slower or was a bit younger when we got her (was told both were about 6 weeks old) In any case, super happy with the eggs - could not believe it but there was ANOTHER egg in the nest today...
Waiting for that FIRST egg! She spent a good hour on the nest on Saturday and left with a loud cackling noise. I run to the coop hoping for sure that this is THE day; unfortunately, the nest was still empty. I really, really want to see that first egg, you know?
I guess I need to update my original reply: for the last week or so, we're back to 'square one': ladies stopped roosting and are going to sleep right on the floor, surrounded by the shavings. I do continue to visit them every evening and prop them on the roost (where they stay for the reminder...
