Force them in the coop at night, or let them stay in run?

So, if I'm reading this right, because I have zero problem with predators, and they HAVE the option, but choose not to, they're probably just fine where they are. But what about the fact that all their manure is then basically staying in the run. I mean, it's deep litter directly on soil (dug...

Force them in the coop at night, or let them stay in run?

The roost box is about 3' x 5', with the roost poles running the 5' length. They are about 11 months old. Our nighttime temps have been in the teens (F).

Force them in the coop at night, or let them stay in run?

Hello! I have 6 girls in this coop/run combo. When I first had them, they would go up in the box at night, and I'd close the door. But after a while, I've learned that they are safe from predators at night (mesh both dug deep, and as an apron around the bottom), so I stopped closing them...

WTT 20-week Plymouth Rock Roo for similar pullet

Yeah. Hey, at least they allow chickens. Some of our neighboring counties don't. I'm assuming Ag zoning allows them, but not Residential. And Sylvie, I'm assuming roosters are pretty much worthless. I'm hoping someone around here has lotsa room to add to their flock/family. Our priorities...

WTT 20-week Plymouth Rock Roo for similar pullet

Hello! We got 6 chicks from Southern States right before Easter. Yup...you guessed it. One of them's a roo. He's a beauty, and we love him, but they're not allowed in our county (Chesterfield, VA). He started with some awkward pubescent crowing yesterday. He was named Michonne, but now we...

    Plymouth Rock thread!

We have two barred PRs that we got as chicks. One is named Michonne (a la The Walking Dead), and one is named Killer. Killer was the runt of all six chicks we had, so we liked the irony. Also, ironically, she is one of the nicest...super curious and friendly. I do fear that Michonne may...

    Fake "Starter" Eggs

I have six chickens and three nest boxes. Any suggestions on how many starter eggs per nest we should use?

    Fake "Starter" Eggs

Great! Thanks! We have roost bars high, and had the best boxes blocked for weeks. I unblocked it because we anticipate them laying soon.

    Fake "Starter" Eggs

When I was a kid, I remember going to my aunt's house and helping pick eggs. And she had fake wooden eggs that were there to encourage hens to lay in the nests. Now, for the first time, I have chickens. Barred Plymouth Rocks, Buff Orps and Golden Wyandottes. They're about 14 weeks. I'm...

    Chicken Run-- what's in it?

Is there any kind of ratio of green vs. dry litter to throw in? I know that when composting, the ratio is important if you're trying to get the appropriate heat build-up. I've been throwing pine shavings and straw, but not many layers of green, like cut grass, etc. Should I be adding more green?

Also, to be fair, I said "thought" they'd be boring looking. Never having had chickens before, picking out chicks, looking at a blurry photo of what they might look like NOW I think they're gorgeous. :D

To be fair, I said 'boring looking'. :) BOs are plainer in appearance than, say, a Golden Wyandotte. But their personalities are so much better. (And all the chickens have great personalities!)

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

We have six chickens, two of which are Buff Orpingtons. I was least excited about those, because I thought they'd be boring looking. The thing I love about them is their personalities! They are SO SWEET! They're more like pets than any of the other chickens. They engage well, and aren't...
