I rely on instinct and inviting nests. Small openings to nests work well for me. My nests are a box attached to side of coop with 10x10 inch holes cut for access. Makes for a dark secure place they naturally want to lay in.
To keep them out of the nests we put used feed bags in each one until the birds are roosting, once accustomed to going to roost each night I can take the bags out. Last thing you want is birds sleeping in nests and getting them all poop. Bad habit that must be broken, empty feed bags are great to have on hand.
