What do you grow to feed the chickens??

I grow a bit of everything for my chickens! Anything I'm not going to use, they get it. Like last year, I decided to grow a ton of tomatoes for some reason. My chickens lived high on the tomato hog for a while! I even put some up for later treats when everything was done growing. I do grow...

I have a current molter too! And she's miserable... but she's alright. She started after those few days we had really cold weather thank goodness. Why she didn't just molt in the fall I don't know.

Review by '' on item 'Brabanter'

I live in a climate that has really harsh winters, and I allow my birds to free range over two acres. We sell eggs, and our customers love a rainbow of eggs, but new customers seem to be easier to break into farm fresh eggs if the shells are white (too used to the grocery store fare). So, we've...

    Farming and Homesteading Heritage Poultry

That's what feels "off" about having to get hatchery birds each year, so you get what we feel. I think my husband is fine with buying from hatcheries because he's liking and expecting the high put-put and fast turn around of these hatchery hybrids, it impresses him to no end, and I get that. I...

    Farming and Homesteading Heritage Poultry

There are so many lovely breeds out there. I think I would love it if breeders went either way- something new, or something old but bred back to utility.

    Farming and Homesteading Heritage Poultry

This is a great thread that I'll be subscribing to here in a second. But first I wanted to thank the originators of it. The first couple of pages in this discussion talked about one exact problem I've run into again and again since we began with chickens. In fact, it's almost come to a point...

new to raising chickens and turkeys.

Welcome! I would read up on blackhead disease. Unless it's been in your bird's living space before, or you introduce chickens that carry it, you shouldn't have a problem. Plenty of people keep turkeys and chickens together. We do.

    Falling in love...

I've read here more than once that if you're raising turkeys for the table to not get too attached to them. I'm trying hard- we have two whites, our first two turkeys ever, that we're raising for slaughter and I am falling in love with them. The way they chirp, the way they look at you and look...
