I have a large batch of chicks who have been raised on medicated feed. They're a month old right now.
A couple weeks ago I thought some seemed a little lethargic. I couldn't find any bloody droppings because they're on dirt. I started treating lightly with an old bottle of liquid Corid I had on...
Thanks for the resources! It's always helpful to read more!
I don't have a vet or friend who can look with a microscope :(
I've dealt with common times of mite and lice before and can't find any visible signs of them, so if it is a mite it's not Red or Northern Fowl. That much I'm 99.5% sure...
It's red. The brooder is outside, so I've been adjusting the lamp several times a day to match whatever temperature is needed. The heat varies.
Hmm, I'm starting to think this is picking. Thank goodness!
I am pretty certain the adults have depluming mites though. They're on high protein feed...
That was my first thought too, but it seems like a big coincidence. Several had bare spots right at the base of their tails, like my adults, with no lost feathers/fluff anywhere else. Any chance you've seen feather picking like this before? I'd love for it to be a simple issue like that! :fl

My three from Dunlap Hatchery aren't my favorite either. They started laying late last fall, but didn't lay throughout the winter. I was told that they might not lay at all the first winter so I accepted it. They all picked back up when the weather starting warming, but as soon as a cold streak...
Right now I'm treating my adult flock with ivermectin pour on for depluming mites. I have no idea how they got these mites, but it's the only mite that matches my hen's symptoms. Namely, bare spots with red skin (base of tail, sides, and neck).
I have a large batch (50+) of chicks, two weeks...
I'm dealing with depluming mites right now. I'm debating about getting sulfer powder vs. spray.
I've read in other places that powders don't work against this type of mite, but this says you can rub in this powder to treat it. Is sulfer different from permethrin in this way?
I've also read...
I've used them before and didn't mind the cleaning, though if nipples don't need ANY cleaning that is even better! Maybe I will give them a try.
Have you ever tried using horizontal nipples with younger birds?
Chicks in the CAL Ranch stores near me are going fast! Earlier this week I went in and asked the employees for details.
They get chicks once a week, and they are sold out in a day and a half. Of everything. I estimate that they get around 200 chicks each week. Possibly more, like 250. I'm not...
