Thank you! My assumption for the jersey giant is based on comb + wattles + saddle feathers and I noticed it sooner. For the lavender orpington, I wasn’t able to tell sooner from the feathers but obviously the comb and wattles are prominent — can you also tell from the feathers?
She may be dehydrated — she drinks water when she’s initially given it, but she doesn’t drink much. Same with food — she will ravenously eat it at first, but a couple hours later I notice she didn’t eat much in total.
I checked her crop first thing this morning. She’s in a bath tub and had...
Yes, a big roo— a light Brahma
I’m thinking about trying a dewormer, even though her newest poop doesn’t have any worms or maggots. It does have a lot of the white sticky urine cap, though. Should I deworm the whole flock? It’s 9 chickens total
I’ll keep checking her crop too.
Thanks!
Hi! Thanks for your questions — I should have included most of this . I’ll try to answer them. I adopted these chickens from a neighbor who had to move suddenly in march.
—she is between 1 - 2 years old. My neighbor started her flocks as chicks in summer 2020, and she was not part of original...
Hello, all!
My copper marans hen has been off for about 2 weeks (maybe a little longer). Here are her symptoms:
- VERY thin
- Unable to use ramp to enter and exit raised coop and to hop up into things over a couple inches off the ground
- Loses balance and sticks a wing out, but rarely flaps...
I have a raised 12ft x 12ft (might be bigger - definitely not smaller) coop. The floor is stick-on linoleum tile. This week, I switched from deep bedding to sand, after hearing a lot of success and having to remove everything for a mite clean out.
However, I’m already not liking the sand, and...
Hello! I’m technically new, although this is my second post. I’ve already found this community very helpful and friendly! I’m not creative, so I’ll use the intro template:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Not new — I had a flock of up to 10 from about 2016-2019...
Thanks! I didn’t see many (maybe not any?) mites when I was cleaning the coop, so I don’t think I had many… but I guess it only takes a few from the bedding to chew you up.
And I laughed out loud at the imagined mites… I have felt like my skin is crawling so much these last few days. We...
Exactly! My mind went straight to thinking I was going to have to clean the whole house, call an exterminator, and live the next X number of weeks battling some kind of infestation! Luckily I haven’t gotten new bites (aside from some mosquitos, but I feel those immediately) in several days. I...
I did read about mite predators and my partner was fascinated by this idea. He’s growing soldier flies now so he’s really into good pests. Have you tried it?
@TOR @rosemarythyme
I cleaned whole coop, sprayed elector psp, sprayed chickens. While cleaning the coop, I found some very small grayish bugs that looked more like book lice or something and 1 or 2 bugs that looked mite shaped (not 100% sure they were mites). Didn’t see a single mite on...
Thank you!! I was convinced for a whole day or two that I had bed bugs. Except only some of my bites were in a line and others were solo bites. But all were on skin that was exposed while I was holding the chicken, so I’m hoping I didn’t bring any indoors and it just took a couple days for some...
I think I’m also comparing these itching to a really bad case of chiggers I got a few years ago where I ended up scratching my skin off my shins because I scratched them so bad. I had at least 60 bites. It was so bad.
Thanks again for your responses. Bugs really freak me out, so a possible...
Wow, thanks for your quick reply :) How long after getting bit did you notice your bites? It took me anywhere from 12-48 hours to notice all the bites I ended up with. Wondering if the ones I didn’t scratch didn’t itch until they were scratched, if that makes sense.
