I couldn't find one of the girls as I was putting them away from free-ranging... turns out she was in the nesting box laying an adorable green egg! we were so surprised, as I had heard that EEs often start to lay late, but she was our first, at a bit over 17 weeks.
Next to a store-bought white:
Don't regret joining BYC. This forum is a great community to be part of if you have or want to have chickens. I don't think anyone means to tell you that your opinion is wrong or that theirs is correct. I think they only meant that we are all trying to be supportive, not of her lying to her mom...
us oo. Part of me thinks they wouldn't even care if we kept him, but we haven't heard an crows yet. (he's trying though!) when he crows, we'll need to relocate him. If no one on BYC wants him, I believe there is a ranch nearby that takes them (according to John at Alamo H&G)
I wish I cold give you some, but my girls aren't laying yet. And, of course, we won't be able to keep our roo much longer. I sure would love to see some little silkie mixes, but I wont be hatching anything. I'm assuming you are in a no-roo area of Danville?
Hmm. Mine started changing gradually, so some were peeping while some were doing a something closer to squawking, and every noise in between. Their 'voices' started changing, I'm guessing about 7 weeks or so. Not sure.
I'm honestly surprised that she thought it would be best not to ask first. I mean, this girl said she had a skunk at one point. Chickens are a lot more reasonable if you ask me.
Anyone in the area interested in adopting a 12 week old Ideal buff silkie Cockerel? We're almost positive she's a he, so we ought to start lining up a home because we cannot have a roo.

Anyone? I know that with silkies it's hard to know, but I really feel lke it's a roo. Do you want to see some of the others for comparison? And if you have a guess on the other silkies by all means et me know.
