I like to use a bunch (as many as i can fit) of sealed mason jars filled with water as a heat mass. It helps hold the temp for me. Nice clean lookin' bator!
Thats an awesome hatch, good for you! My first hatch went very well too but this one stinks big time. Too bad there were some quite expensive eggs this time.
The hatchery Barred Rock males (like I have) are usually a lighter silver with a black bar, and the females are usually a very dark charcoal color that look like they have white bars. I do have a silver hen that I thought was a slow to mature rooster so the color is not 100% correct. I'm also...
Well I'm pretty disappointed with only 3 out of 21 Barnevelders to hatch, especially since I went and picked them up personally but it's better than none. Today is day 21 for the Ameraucana's and it looks like none are going to hatch. At the first candling it looked like all the eggs but one...
Here is the best way I have found. It does require cracking the egg open though, but at least you will know without a doubt. Good luck.

I have 2 shakers I have not done the final candling yet, i'll do that when I go into lock down tomorrow. I have to go out of state tomorrow so I hope the shakers don't pip early.
Looks like I'm going to have a poor hatch. 50% of the Barnevelders are clear and I only saw development in 1 of the Ameraucanas. The blue eggs are real hard to see into so I kept them in for now, pretty bummed.
These guys are double laced LF from the Johan line. http://www.ctbiofarmer.com/barnevelder.php Very nice people and beautiful chickens as well, I'm very excited for them hatch
I'll join the fun! I set 21 Barnevelders on the 15th and 12 Wheaton/Blue Wheaton Ameraucana's on the 17th. This will be my second hatch in a homemade incubator.
She has no injuries at all, I checked her head to toe, although it could be a bird type dog that "mouthed" her. The pile of feathers was what was left of my Barred rooster, he was the only casualty. Whatever got him took him with them.

Definitely not far at all, but we were all inside and she showed up about an hour after we did. She would not have herd us, but she is one of my favorites and she and her buddy follow me around everywhere I go. She will even be near me while I'm splitting wood and running the chain saw.
