Here is the situation:
My hen brooded 6 eggs and killed each of them as they hatched but one, eating three of them. She has never done that before, and now she's acting hostile but not outright aggressive towards the lone survivor. She is my only broody and she has some terrible habits, but...
I've checked and mostly their minimums are more than I need. Good suggestion.
Okay, I've done some leg work and found someone here in town. It's through CL, so cross your fingers I don't get murdered.
Hello All: I had six eggs under my broody and she ATE most of them, crushed one, and one was infertile - BUT I had ONE hatch. She's in danger if I leave her with her mother and the local stores don't have chicks. I need a couple of babies to keep my single company, but am having a really hard...
I had six babies, all EExSF and BRxSF, and I guess there were three males and three females. Then a nasty raccoon came along and at my baby girls. I saw him do it, little jerk.
Anyway, my dear husband, after he had dispatched the raccoon, reminded me that I can let my broody-inclined hen...
Big and Little G - these girls are RIRs. Little G also thinks she's a rooster and tries to crow back to my SF roo who lives in another coop. It sounds like someone is hitting her with a cat.
Tina/Louise - Wellsummer pair of hens. I don't know which is which, so they're collectively known as...
Not yet. One went broody so I have EE/Faverolles eggs under her. I'm building a new, bigger coop so they'll all get the chance to be with the rooster very soon. Thank you for reminding me about this post, though. I'll be sure to come back and update!
The other day my SF rooster was picking up the orange extension cord I use for their heated waterer and making the "I've got treats!" noise, but it didn't fool the girls. They're usually all afraid of snakey things, but I guess my roo didn't get that memo.
They only really seem to be afraid...
If you had that giant beard, you might have trouble seeing where your feet were, too. Besides, you can't judge the entire EE breed by your dumb birds. I have dumb RIRs, but I would never say that in a breed review.
Thank you for the information. They were great birds and I miss them. I think I found the person we gave them to when we moved to IL, so hopefully they have some grand- or great grand-children that I can acquire and add to my flock. Hooray!
Hi there! I raised these as a kids, but never really knew what breed they were. Someone on the "what breed/sex/etc?" thread suggested it might be a black red american game and thought I should check the game threads. Do they look familiar to anyone?
Golly guys, thank you so much for responding! These were super friendly birds and very efficient at feeding themselves. They could teach the rest of my flock a lesson or two.
Hi All! These are (rather poor, but best I have) photos of the birds we raised when I was a child. We got ten hens and a rooster from a man my mother worked with who was retiring from cock fighting. Thank goodness we could give them a safe place to live! We let them free range, which they...
