Interesting. It looked like an instant death. I can't figure out if the hawk caused the heart attack or what.
Thank you so much for your reply. That is what I thought may have happened, but I just don't know how hawks work. Now I know.
So, bare with me as this may sound like I am asking a stupid question.
We first got chicks last year and live on 10 acres. We lost our first hen today. As a quick background, she was molting in November in Ohio, but my hubby thought she looked more "off". He said her red things on her head...
Thank you for all of the great input! We put eggs under the hen, because by the time we caught on (first timers here), I think the hen had been broody for a bit and stopped laying. She wasn't laying any of her own, so we gave her some. She sat on them until 1 hatched and the chick started...
The incubated hatch is the same color, mostly black with black feet. So... maybe? Would a hen kill it if rejecting it or just ignore it? Would you recommend waiting a day or two for chick to eat and "catch up" a bit? If only this one other chick hatches, I don't want to raise it in a brooder...
Welcome! I will be entering my 20th year of homeschooling this fall. I wanted 8 kids--- was blessed with 4 and am finishing up my homeschooilng journey with 3 graduated and the youngest going into 10th grade. I am new with chickens as we started last fall, but this site is a great...
I have a question... how successful were you in sticking chicks under mom on a staggered hatch? I just had one hatch in an incubator 5 days after first and only hatch under mom. I may get another one or two. Did you have any success putting younger chicks under momma hen?
Thank you. I would hate to take that little chick from its momma. Mom seems to be doing a good job and a usually ornery hen is focused on something besides being ornery lol!
Praying I get one more hatch out of the batch!
I could use advice. On Monday, I went out to the coop to see that my hen hatched 1 out of 5 eggs she had been sitting on. This is the first time we have done this and hen is a first-time mom. Little chick looked great and was all dry and perky when I saw it that afternoon. Just a few hours...
I might be a wimp, but this hen scares me and is a bit ornery. I tried to get near her and chick and she is just puffing up and getting ready to strike. Eggs were in a nesting box 2 feet up. I think this is going to be a problem in general with the chick hopping out. I have them in an...
My hen just one chick about 2:30 p.m. today. She was in a nesting box and was staying on the other 4 eggs, but left to follow hatched chick. Eggs have all been under her the same amount of time. Another hen came and sat on eggs for about an hour after. Eggs have been left with no hen on...
We are first time chicken owners as of last fall. We decided to let our broody hen try to hatch chicks and she is sitting on 5 eggs. I have not candled or done anything except mark them. She should be having some of them hatch within the week. We have a coop with raised nesting boxes, about 2...
Hello everyone!
We are relatively new chicken owners, getting 6 hens and a rooster last October. We have acreage and have meant to get chickens for some time, but because of the craziness of the past few years and seeing the possibility of food shortages, we dove in. Our flock is a mix of...
