Thank you!! LOL! Me too :) We worked our butts to buy this place and now that we have it we are very much enjoying it!!
A couple days ago I started some peppers and tomatoes for the garden! We have a short growing season up here, last frost date is May 16 so gardens go in mid-late May. I'm...
Hey I just found this thread too! I just started getting into sheep. I have 20 bred ewes right now, all first time lambers. They are Dorset/East Friesen crosses. The people I bought them from like the East Friesen in their ewes as it tends to add to milk production so they can support more...
Great thread! We are very into the "homesteading" lifestyle. Our farm is a full quarter section (160 acres) so we have lots of opportunity! Right now we still have lots of snow but it's melting at least :) Our garden goes in mid-May. We are expanding on it this year and going to start some...
Awww babies! I'm jealous! I grew up with 2 pygmy goats I had as pets. When I went to college I gave them to some neighbour girls LOL They adored them too! They are so fun to have around. I'm actually thinking about getting a couple again just to have around. I miss their silly antics, and little...
I buy most of my clothes used as well. I think it's fun looking through everything and getting such a good deal! The thought of spending $50 on a new sweater makes me a little ill LOL We are working towards being more self sustainable with our food too. I'm planning my garden already (we can't...
Yup! Coyotes are extremely over populated in many places (here). Not even close to endangered. Foxes aren't as rampant but they are certainly not endangered here. You can legally shoot both year round here, and trap them in winter.
Yeah, we keep a .22 handy as foxes and coyotes are abundant here. They are shot on site. They are pretty, but it's our job to protect our domestic animals. Relocating doesn't usually work.
You could probably sell that fox for his hide. We sell our coyote carcasses in the winter, don't even...
I recently got a new roo, Bandit :) He's so handsome and has settled right in with my girls nicely. He's very sweet and docile, and sweet to my girls. He's a Cochin. I have 2 Cochin hens and I can't wait to hatch out some of his babies with them!
Just wanted to add my 2 cents about the water, here it gets down into the -40's in winter (and we have long winters), and I use heated water dishes for my chickens. They are awesome. You do have to keep them plugged in, but they definitely are not as pricey to run as a heat lamp. They are great...
I would say it depends on breed, and climate. Animals acclimate very well, so if you have cold winters your chickens should adjust. Today's high was -19 C/-2 F and my flock was outside all day (by choice). That's a pretty normal winter temperature here, and there was no wind chill. We have long...
Yes, they are Large Fowl :) Thank you so much for your response! I love how much I am learning from this website (and this thread!). The show is just a small, 1 day, laid back show at a rodeo fair. I would love to go just for the experience, and to talk to and meet more breeders.
I love this thread :) I don't post much have learned a ton from it as a "newbie" to Cochins! I bought my 2 girls from a show quality breeder, but of course she couldn't gaurantee show quality as they were chicks when I got them. They are 18 weeks old now. Do you all think they are show quality...
