    Is this over-the-top protective/predator proof?

...And if you are non-urban there is no difference. Certainly we have our share of the raccoons, foxes, etc. but we also have country folks who know what a chicken is worth ($5) but don't recognize rare breeds and show quality. And we have city folks who think that one bird out of a flock, a...

    Door Latch Ideas Needed

Our latches work great now, but I dunno if they will be much fun once it gets snowy. We used hanger bolts (one end is a wood screw and the other is a machine screw) and after the wood screw was attached, put a butterfly nut on the other end. So far it has befuddled at least one raccoon.

Almost there - Mostly done coop pics

Thanks Dogfish. The doors are actually quite manageable. the ply is only 1/4" so there isn't a lot of weight there. I have decided though that the bi-fold willbe reversed so that the centre section opens downwards. For a quick reach in, or for ventilation, it will work better that way. A...

    Need assistance with coop design

If you paid that, you musta got it from As-is, and you are stuck with it. Put it up by th edoor to store your chicken supplies in! Then quickly call this guy and use this wardrobe the same way you were planning on using that cupboard. Being solid wood it should stand up better to the elements...

Why does everyone hang the water and food from a rope?

We have put ours on bricks, but the girls still kick stuff into the water. I may build a little 3" high fence to go around the water.

Attaching 2x3 welded wire to wood posts

We are also using fencing staples. Cheap and easy. Only difficulty is tha tthey have a tendancy to want to not go in straight. They twist in your fingers when you try to hold them. Once you hit them twice though, they are fine.

I still need to make th eegg-spaces and put windows on, but here is where we are at with the coop. I need to get busy with attaching windows and the laying boxes since the front of the coop was covered with paw prints (I suspect from the neighbour's Jack Russel) this morning. I wonder if I can...

    Coop information overload

Quote: Big Brother is Watching! I had no idea...creepy. Thanks for bringing it up though. Our plan was to have the roof over the whole shebang. We'll have to look into this more - way more. Just go to your planning department and verify the wording in the bylaw. If it says coverage should...

    Coop information overload

First off I am pretty new to this too, so I am passing along what I have gleaned along the way. Second I live in the Toronto area, but I think your conditions are "close enough" to follow teh same rules. The going rule for space is 4 sq ft per bird, so your coop should be big enough for 4...

UPDATE: Pics URL on post #24: Journal of a newbie coop builder

If I could humbly make a suggestion, you may not need to OSB at all. The 1/4" may be enough if you just put another piece of 2X4 under it to support the load. Why not put the 1/4" stuff in, and see how rigid it feels. If you think it feels OK, then just put the vinyl right on it. The plywood...
