Just a update: animal control went out immediately and spoke with them, at first it didn’t seem to do anything, dog came back twice and was still in the road. My husband called and spoke with the officer who said he thinks the issue is they have a nanny there all day, he wasn’t sure they got the...
I would prefer not to have to shoot the dog, thus the one time warning given via animal control, but will if it comes back. They have children as well, I’d like to avoid a “you killed my pet” scenario if it all possible. But I won’t hesitate to do what I have to if my chickens, cats or kids are...
Yes, they said they are sending out an officer in the morning as well as requiring they pay for the chicken. They said the first time is a warning they second time they take the dog. Everyone in the neighborhood has livestock, chickens/ducks/horses/dogs etc. it’s just this one family that allows...
I am both sad and mad. The neighbor who moved in this summer, has made a practice of letting their dogs run the neighborhood. Daily someone comes close to running them down on the road. Today one of their dogs came into my back yard, into my fenced in run and took one of my favorite hens. Animal...
I feel like I'm a Muppet all winter because of my gloves. :th
I do a lot more complaining in the cold too as you can see. :)
I couldn’t even find any gloves today so after putting on two jackets and hats I just grabbed socks and stuck them on my hands LOL working with sock mittens is not my...
What tweaks to your system are you having to make due to cold weather? It’s been below zero for awhile (before wind chill is factored in) and will be for the next week at least. I had to switch from fermented feed to regular for now as it’s freezing rock solid in minutes. The light bulb in a...
While I will defer to those with more experience, I think* because of the feather loss you have a good system going. But once they have all their feathers I would discontinue it. My concern would be if you have a backup plan in case the power goes out and they have to rapidly adjust.
I’m in MI too, so far the chickens are doing great. And they are in a unheated coop with one window always open.
Last year we had those low cold snaps like this and we had one chicken running around in the backyard (not ours) all alone, all winter long. Turned out she lived in the gutted out...
I use light in both the am and pm. It started accidentally when I forgot to shut it off one night (I didn’t have a timer yet) and found them much calmer at night, all up on the roosts and already asleep. Before they would entire a darker than outside coop and getting all of them on roosts was a...
I use purina layena (it says oyster strong on the front) and I don’t give extra oyster shell. The shells are so hard you really have to wack them to crack them. I’ve dropped them (in coop and kitchen) and my six year stood on one accidentally in the coop and not a crack in sight. *not every egg...
I use the light bulb in a cinder block method. I scraped the ground down to dirt, placed the light bulb (my hubby took the shield off one of those metal clamp style lamps) inside one of the sides, placed a large metal feeding bowl (from tractor supply) over it and my white and red 5 gallon...
