We got "her" on Craigslist as a buddy for my sole surviving cochin from a bear attack. I figured getting two broody breeds would lend itself well to rebuild my flock next spring. Two ducks one chicken?
I recently lost all but one chicken to a bear. The one who lived fled to the lower area where the ducks were and, for whatever reason, the bear didn't get them. They are all buddies but does the chicken need other chickens? I was hoping to wait until she gets broody and give her some eggs or... -

A bear got 6/7 of my chickens...
I feed them periodically during the day and dont even leave feeders out ever (to keep rodents away) and we keep the feed in the garage not near the coop. The coop is next to a hill that is covered in bearberry so I'm wondering if they came for the berries and stayed for the chickens. I'm close...- Psei

I have a dog... I don't mind him getting a zap to teach a lesson to stay away... but would that be enough to actually kill him? He's about 55lbs.- Psei

This idea is really appealing to me. Honestly, if the survivor was any of my other chickens I wouldn't even consider putting a chick near them, but she's is just so sweet. Thank you for the advice!- Psei

We are absolutely addressing the security issue. The bear pried open a metal storm door that was deadbolted shut that serves as the front door of the coop. It's amazing how strong and determined that bear was! Adding another deadbolt to that side of the door should prevent it from happening again.- Psei
