We got "her" on Craigslist as a buddy for my sole surviving cochin from a bear attack. I figured getting two broody breeds would lend itself well to rebuild my flock next spring. I know silkies sometimes scream... and "she" has made some screamy noises before, but this morning it was a bit too...

    Two ducks one chicken?

She was raised with the ducks and they are all buddies. No worries about safety just mental health.

    New Chicken Introduction

About a month ago, I lost six chickens to a bear. This left me with one chicken (a cochin) and two ducks (the ducks sleep outside under the coop). Since then the cochin has been sleeping in the outside fenced area with the duck, roosting above them sleeping under her. Everyone advised me to get...

    Two ducks one chicken?

I recently lost all but one chicken to a bear. The one who lived fled to the lower area where the ducks were and, for whatever reason, the bear didn't get them. They are all buddies but does the chicken need other chickens? I was hoping to wait until she gets broody and give her some eggs or...

A bear got 6/7 of my chickens...

I feed them periodically during the day and dont even leave feeders out ever (to keep rodents away) and we keep the feed in the garage not near the coop. The coop is next to a hill that is covered in bearberry so I'm wondering if they came for the berries and stayed for the chickens. I'm close...

I have a dog... I don't mind him getting a zap to teach a lesson to stay away... but would that be enough to actually kill him? He's about 55lbs.

Ha! That makes so much sense! I bet that's what they thought. Containing a bear would never ever occur to me obviously. Pretty funny.

I was browsing units on Amazon asked a question and this is what I got: The manufacturer answered your question, "Is this strong enough for bears?" about Zareba ESP10M-Z 10-Mile Solar Low Impedance.... Consumer Relations answered: "We do not recommend the use of electric fencing to deter bears...

A bear got 6/7 of my chickens...

This idea is really appealing to me. Honestly, if the survivor was any of my other chickens I wouldn't even consider putting a chick near them, but she's is just so sweet. Thank you for the advice!

A bear got 6/7 of my chickens...

The truthly sad part of all this is they were just getting ready to lay, we actually found our first tiny egg while cleaning up the carnage. So she hasn't really had a chance to be broody yet. We're gonna figure out what's best for her even if we have to give her away. We have spoken with the...

A bear got 6/7 of my chickens...

We made a lot of security updates to the outside fenced area of the coop because we keep ducks outside. Because of this and the warm summer I had been leaving the coop door open, the bear got into the coop but couldn't get into the outside part (it tried to bend the fence) so she fled to the...

A bear got 6/7 of my chickens...

We are absolutely addressing the security issue. The bear pried open a metal storm door that was deadbolted shut that serves as the front door of the coop. It's amazing how strong and determined that bear was! Adding another deadbolt to that side of the door should prevent it from happening again.

The chicken the bear didn't get is the sweetest of the bunch. The other chickens would scuffle and fight for dominance and she always just hung out being cool. A friend gave us two younger chickens and when everyone else was mean to them (after a slow introductory period) she slept with the...
