    MS Vent

Most flocks have it. I’ve been told 70-80% of breeders flocks would test positive which is also why it’s not typically required for NPIP. Most would fail if required to test for MG. If you think about it NPIP is rather pointless except in ensuring that pylorium typhoid stays eradicated in almost...

Marek's is taking over my flock and I'm not sure what to do

Out of curiosity, the ones that are vaccinated are they vaccinated properly and then kept in quarantine? A&M told me 5 days of quarantine per field studies, but another guideline I read showed efficacy increased each week and finally achieved 95%+ at week 3. If the chicks aren’t in complete...

    Coccidiosis question

I don’t think She’s hot. Temp is actually room air which is 77 right now upstairs. They are almost 4 weeks. The brooder has a light as well as a heater (heater is off). The light gives extra warmth on one side. Other chicks are acting normal.

    Coccidiosis question

Hi Rose, the one that is lethargic has watery poop but she’s also drinking more than eating so that could explain that as well. No blood which I know doesn’t occur with all strains.

    Coccidiosis question

I’ve never dealt with coccidiosis and I’m unclear if chickens are born with a low level in their gut or if they get it from the soil. Would 3 week old indoor chicks in a clean hatching time brooder(has poop tray) get coccidiosis)? I have one acting lethargic and eating less and I’m trying to...

Marek's is taking over my flock and I'm not sure what to do

Cheers! Sorry about your struggles. Out of curiosity did your vaccinated ones come from a breeder or a hatchery or did you vaccinate yourself? I’ve now had 3 separate vets including A&M tell me that my hen who was covered with internal tumors and diagnosed with visceral Mareks was not vaccinated...

    Visceral Mareks

thanks for the reply. And the last article was great. That’s for providing the link. Yeah, I couldn’t find any definitive info on incubation period other than a range. I just found it interesting that two experts said visceral takes 9-12 months to develop and usually is seen in hens after 12...

    Visceral Mareks

I did. A&M did the necropsy. And before death, my vet consulted with an international poultry board. Best guess pre necropsy was enterococcus of the spine. Necropsy confirmed spine injury/infection. Negative Mareks.

    Visceral Mareks

Does anyone have solid information on the incubation and development of visceral Mareks? I know there are several forms of Mareks and various presentations, but I was told visceral Mareks takes much longer to manifest. A vaccinated hen was purchased from a well known breeder and died 4 months...

Lymphoid Leukosis in Murray McMurray birds?

NPIP doesn’t require testing for Mareks or AVL. It’s meant for PT and more recently PT and AI. MG is not required either. Just learned this the hard way as I have a necropsy confirmed visceral Mareks death in an allegedly vaccinated hen. The university Vet who performed the necropsy said the hen...

    Guess these silkies genders!

This is great. I’m looking at my 3 week old silkies and think I have all boys based on combs lol. I have hope now.

    Vaccinate or Not

I think it depends on the vaccine and disease we are referencing. Yes, Mareks vaccine is considered a leaky vaccine but it does have its role. The problem with Mareks is that many flock owners are bringing in new chickens all the time- different ages, unknown carrier status and from different...

    Vaccinate or Not

I learned the hard way. I’m in Texas too. One year, my girls just got dry pox. The following year My newer girls got dry pox and one sadly succumbed to wet pox. She basically suffocated to death. It was horrible to see after we tried everything to save her. Necropsy revealed wet pox in her...

    Vaccinate or Not

I lost a polish to Fowl Pox (the wet version). It was very sad to watch. My vet recommended I vaccinate the rest of the flock. I would use other vaccines as deemed appropriate. For those that don’t vaccinate their chickens as a means to weed out the weak, have strong genetics etc. do you...

    Silkies/sizzles in Austin, TX

I bought eggs from Marsha’s Silkies and Sizzles and Sheri Minkner. These are high-quality chicks. Hatched 20 days ago. I have a few left. The naked neck is no longer available.
