    Put Chicks Outside Too Soon.

IN response to What Did I Do: the chicks were in a pen with a coop and run area. They fell asleep outside of the coop, which gave the predator the chance to pull them through the wire. I would never leave any of my chickens "out" at night, young or old.

    Put Chicks Outside Too Soon.

ThanKS everyone for your quick responses and advice. On my way now for some hardware cloth. They have a little coop area attached to the run, but for some reason that night they piled up in the corner of the run outside. :(

    Put Chicks Outside Too Soon.

i had 6 one-month-old chicks (Bantam Cochins and Silkies) which I made the mistake of thinking were ok to put outside in our smaller pen, which we wittily refer to as the Juvenile Detention Center, which allows them to get bigger before I introduce them fully to the flock. I have regular...

    New Chicks Can't Walk!

It didn't work, although it appeared to help one a little at first. That one began using one leg "somewhat," but they have both since died. The first one two mornings ago, and the improved one yesterday morning. I think if I had started this therapy from the get-go, it might've been successful...

Shaken up by deformed chick- assisted hatch.

I don't see anyway this chick can possibly survive without human help for the rest of its life (if it makes it beyond even a couple days). I've had chicks with deformed legs/feet, and they always end up dying. The humane thing is to cull them, that way they don't suffer more than necessary in...

    New Chicks Can't Walk!

So Chickenzoo, the idea is that they cannot get out but they will try by using their legs thus making them stronger?

    Sudden Death In Lethargic Hen...WHY????

SHe had no wounds. How does one go about checking for worms?

    New Chicks Can't Walk!

I had 12 chicks hatch over the weekend, so they are 3 and 4 days old currently. Six were bantam Cochins, and they are all healthy and fine. the other six were Silkies, and all but two of them are also fine. It's the two I'm very concerned about. Although they appear perfectly normal (no...

When can I move my chicks to the outside coop?

I usually wait until their wings are well feathered out and they are more agile and alert than when they are in the first couple weeks. I've moved mine outside as early as the end of the second week, but only in spring or summer when the weather isn't too cool, unless you're going to have a heat...

    Sudden Death In Lethargic Hen...WHY????

OK, so my one yr old Cochin hen had been very lethargic for two days (not moving around, sleeping a lot, not eating), but I just chocked it up to this brutal Georgia heat. Then, to my shock and extreme sadness (she was my favorite), on the third morning after this behavior began, she was dead in...

I Helped My First Two Chicks Hatch--Big Mistake! Help!

THanks everyone for the good advice. All the chicks have hatched. Those first two on Saturday and the rest on Sunday. I did as instructed and LEFT THEM ALONE. Sure enough, by Sunday afternoon, the first two that I thought I had inadvertently murdered were running around like crazy and acting...

I Helped My First Two Chicks Hatch--Big Mistake! Help!

Ok, so, this is my first hatch. I had 6 Silkie eggs and 6 bantam Cochin eggs in my Little Giant. Today was day 19, and first thing this morning I had two Cochin eggs peeping and pipping. I was so stoked! But I tried t busy myself and just check in on their progress every hour or so. However, by...

Hem had some like that, too. But they are the true blue-laced reds. Mine turns into the splash, which is more of a creamy and deep burgundy red when grown. I saw all of his birds and all ages. Mine are def blrw.

HELP? What Kind Of chick Am I?

Went back today to the farm where I bought the eggs and took our chicks with me. He confirmed that they are, indeed, blue-laced red wyandottes. He called them the "sport" coloration, but said many refer to it as splash. He showed me the same birds from 1week old to adults, and they are stunning...
