I am in Woodstock Ontario - probably 10 KM from a commercial Turkey farm outbreak and quarantine area. I have three backyard chickens in the city. Do I need to panic? I don't visit farms, I don't ship or sell birds or eggs. What should I be doing to keep my girls safe?
Their food and water is...
I would say about 3 weeks ago.
Her laying isn't a lighting issue, I don't believe. The other two are laying just fine and have been for 4 months.
They are all eating the same thing - laying mash, some BOSS, free ranging in the yard during the day, oyster shell offered as they want it, as well...
We bought 3 " 1 year old" chickens in July - two Heritage RIR and one utility RIR/LH. Both of our HRIR have been laying very well over the summer and fall.
However, our RIR/LH has given us maybe 3 low quality eggs (thin shells) and numerous shell-less eggs - or no eggs at all. She had a sinus...
OKAY - so I got in touch with a vet and a really nice guy came out to look at Maple.
He does not suspect anything serious with her eye or a serious respiratory disease. He said he could smell infection or rot that may be coming from her cop and sinuses. She has some sinus discharge.
I had...
Sounds awesome!
The only road kill I can say I have ever smelled, has been skunk!
Nothing dripping from her eye or puss...there is a lump under the surface of the skin, on the side of her face. Eye is not visibly swollen, just closed.
She sounds like a very loud purring cat. Her crop seems firm...
I have moved her into the kid's playhouse (and discovered it makes a great coop LOL) and either tomorrow or Monday I can check in at the farm store or TSC. I have no idea if there is a vet that would look at her. Is it possible for a vet to look at her at no cost??
Her face smells like - um -...
We have 3 RIR's - over a year old, 2 are Heritage, one (Maple) is utility crossed with Leg Horn.
All were treated with a spray for fleas last month in an effort to get our Maple to start laying. They have all been bug-free since and Maple has started to regrow feathers. I was hopeful.
Now...
She isn't broody, not laying in her nest. She was treated for possible fleas as I saw some white build up on some feathers and I spotted a couple bugs. This was over a week ago.
Not 100% sure about molting.... I have only seen a few lost feathers in the coop, not more than I would think is normal.
We have had 3 birds for a month now, 2 HRIR and one URIR. The 2 HRIR are laying well but after almost a month, miss Maple, our URIR hasn't given us a thing.
I suspected that she may have fleas, so we did a liquid spray treatment (sevin isn't available to is) on all of them and I am not seeing...
It came with a large directions sheep but it has no directions for a space or surface spray or for animals...only veggies, trees shrubs and fruit.....There is directions for a perimeter spray for spiders of 20mL per 1L
Ok, I eventually asked my husband to try to figure it out when he came home and I finally just did 10mL in 1L of water for our 3 birds and around their pen. Was that okay??
And yes, a syringe worked really well! That is what I used.

Hello All!
I really need some help in figuring out how to dilute this liquid permethrin I bought to rid my birds of fleas. I would love to use Sevin, but it's banned in Ontario and unless I have a farm I cannot buy it from the farm store. My other option is DE (which I am considering in their...
Woohoo!! Our 2nd Heritage RIR has laid an egg!! This is our 1st day collecting 2 eggs. I'm hopeful now, that all of my girls will be laying soon. We are enjoying fresh eggs from our chickens and fresh produce from our garden. Love it :D
