    Yet another duck question...sorry everyone.

My ducks are happier sleeping outside. They had a shelter for the first year I had them, and NEVER slept in it. So I am now using it elsewhere and they have been fine. Maybe he would like a buddy to snuggle with?

Black Ameraucana cockerel - Free- NW Oregon/SW Washington

This guy hatched late May this year, egg from Lisa Cree. Too many roosters, and I am going to focus on the Marans, so he needs a home. I will be in Canby this Saturday or Sunday (at Oregon Flock and Fiber) or we can meet in the Salem area. Would prefer not to ship. Thanks for looking!

Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

Quote: So the Splash will carry the genes too? I plan on keeping a Splash roo and the 3 pullets I got (2 splash, 1 blue) and going on from there, but this color will still be there even in the Splash right? Will the Blacks have copper in them too? I see that I have a lot to learn about this...

Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

Why are my blue roos turning gold? You can see in the one in the back some coppery gold color on the wings. The one in front has some gold to the hackles in this picture, it has since gotten more pronounced and is also showing up on the saddle feathers. They are 20 weeks old. The pullet does...

Which Splash Marans roo should I keep?

My first time hatching Marans, I have 2 splash and 2 blue to choose from. I am leaning towards keeping a splash because I don't like the color on either of the blues. Here they are, they hatched April 24th, so are 14 weeks old. Rooster 1: Rooster 2: Both hatched out of a similar...

    My babies seem hot?????ANYONE??????

Quote: I agree. Mine are 1 1/2 weeks and I am going to take their light away this weekend. There isn't enough room in there for them to get away from the heat. If they are in a cold room, you could try a 60 watt bulb.

    bedding for ducks??

I've been using the pine pelleted bedding, working well. It soaks up a lot of water, seems like it will compost down quickly in the garden as well.

    Silver Appleyard Duck Incubation

Good luck with your hatch Miss Prissy! I too hatched some eggs from my own duck flock this spring, it makes you so proud. I told the ducks they were mommies, but they just kept snarfling around in the grass.

    Ducks in water all night?

I asked a very similar question last year when I was first raising my ducks. They do spend a lot of time on the water. That is fine. They are not like chickens, they don't seem to "go to bed" at night. They are up and about during the night as well as daytime, doing all their regular ducky things.

    Thinkin' about getting some geese!

Yes, they get layer feed at night, I mix 50:50 with Flock Raiser during breeding season along with free choice oyster shell. I haven't weighed what I feed, but there is usually a little left in the morning. The ducks always seem hungrier for the food than the geese do. Later in the season when...
