for those who have ordered from Cackle...

I ordered from Cackle online and it took them a few days for my shipping date, and they sent them when I wanted and promptly sent my confirmation. I got 15 silkies and they threw in a few extra. All came alive and thriving. Over two weeks I lost only two; however, I'm pleased with how the chicks...

    Corn Cob Bedding!

I would be sort of worried about them pecking/trying to eat the cob and choking. :O If you have a Walmart close by, the sell huge things of pine shavings for $6+ in the pet section. Pine shavings work great!

    Improving fertility

You could try introducing hatchery stock, I know some people do such to improve fertility rates (if they aren't hatchery stock). You could try a new roo with your hens, or new hens with your roo. But, if the breeding aren't working out fertility/large chicks I personally wouldn't do that...

    Getting chicks to eat grit.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It's nice to hear what everyone has tried. I'm letting them go outside and they are bug-hunting, eating tidbits so I figured grit was a good idea. The only thing that works with the yogurt is when I smear it on the side of the brooder. They literally attack...

Sexing Silkies. Lots of Help Required

I would love to know too. At what age does the toe-trick work? Mine are 3 weeks. :

    Getting chicks to eat grit.

My 3 week old silkies are afraid of their grit bowl. And yogurt bowl. I was wondering what is the easiest way to get them to eat it? Is it a good idea to mix it in with their feed? And by nature, are silkie chicks skittish? ;o I have worked very hard with taming them and the whole treat gig...

    Eating bugs?

Quote: I catch crickets in the backyard and have bought mealworms for them before, but don't do it often since mine find plenty free-ranging. The first time you watch them catch a frog or a mouse and beat it to death on the nearest solid surface before ripping it apart, you'll realize what...

    Eating bugs?

Thank you everyone for your awesome replies! Being a new chicken mommy makes you worry about the most tiny of things. I just get concerned about their little digestive systems at this age. But, it was awfully funny watching them catch earwigs, carry it around in their little beaks like, "Lookie...

why is my chick always jumping ON the others?

Mine are doing this a lot. It's funny because I have 10 blue silkie chicks and none do this. However, 4 out of the 5 whites dive bomb one another (especially two I'm thinking are roos) and from what I've observed, it's sheer pecking order. The most dominant and bold ones out my little baby flock...

    Eating bugs?

My babies are now two weeks old and I took them out for the first time today. : My question is, however, how safe is it for them to eat insects? I caught a few eating earwigs and various other critters running around in my garden box. I've just read there is a good chance they can catch...

Cochin Without Fuzzy Feet, WHAT THE HECK IS SHE??? *Updated Pics*pg 3

I think she is a White Black Tailed Japanese bantam. I was looking at her feathers coming in and they look like the adult version. She also looks like the chicks. If you look at the wings of the adult and your chick, you might have a winner? The pattern is pretty close.

    Northern/Central California Show

Quote: Darn! Stockton is just down the road from me (well 50 miles but well within easy driving distance). I'd be interesting in knowing if there are any shows coming up in Northern Cali. I've shown dogs for 20+ years and would love to see how the chicken folks work a show. What kind of...

    Hatchery~Show Quality?

Bottom line is there is no such thing as "show quality eggs" but there is potential for a show quality bird from SQ parents. You could get a batch of "SQ eggs" and get nothing worth while. Or a few good ones. You just never know. It's the luck of the draw you'll get that one golden bird from...
