What are your opinions on free ranging?

Our chickens have all the land they want. Our garden is fenced from the deer, rabbits, and other critters. 95 percent of the time they are within 50 yards of the house. Sometimes they will go on a walk about. They know where the good treats are and always come running when they see us. I won't...

How early do you let your chickens out?

I've been doing it all wrong. We have all different Breeds, including polish. I have an automatic door on our coop. In 10 years we have only lost one chicken. Wife forgot to close the people door after adding more staw to the coop and a coon got one. Chickens are free to roam over 10 acres. May...

I prefer straw. Add a little more every now and then. Clean the coop twice a year. Put it in the compost, the chickens help All summer to break it down into awesome compost.

    Free range unattended?

Mine can go anywhere they please. In 8 years of chickens, we lost one because my wife accidentally left the coop door open overnight and a coon got one ( our favorite). We have an automatic door that opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. The only other problem we had was the neighbors pheasant...

Help! My wife is mad at me for feeding the chickens pizza!

Mine eat whatever they want. Total free range. A bag of chicken feed will last 2 or 3 months. They love steak scraps.

Almost lost a chicken to the forest fires.

Living in Montana, we had a really bad fire season this year. Thankfully, none were close to us, but we still get the smoke. It has been VERY smokey this year. We have 4 chickens we let free range. One of them, our Buff became ill. Her belly became swollen and her comb limp and dark. She would...

    finally have it done!

Still have to put the rain barrel on the down spout. Chickens braved the wind for the first day outside. They had fun . Made all the work worth it!

loud chirping and major head scratching

We got them from North 40, a farm store. She has been drinking along with everyone else. We are giving her 1 baby aspirin to a quart of water solution. It seems to be helping, Will know more a little later. I haven't heard her go spastic for a while. Hope this helps,Poor thing like to be held. I...
