Update: buff’s left eye has stopped responding to light and motion. Her wings are loose and droopy and she can’t swallow pellet feed. She will eat crumbles if fed by hand. Her droppings are green.
I think I need to accept that we likely have mareks in our flock and this little one isn’t going...
Buff’s eyes- photos taken within seconds of each other so it’s an even comparison. She can see her food and water and seems to be able to see well enough. We have added extra food and water stations and seen her use them all. Today in particular though she isn’t very interested in eating.
The...
Hi there, I am writing to ask for insight about my 22 week old buff orpington, Jane. It seems like her physical development stopped around the 16 week point, especially compared to our lavender orpington Gracie from the same breeder and same age. Jane’s personality has become more reserved in...
Hi Kellyland, how is she doing? Our cuckoo marans, Clover, had similar symptoms and passed away after about a month of progressive decline. Hoping yours is doing better!
Looks like a cockerel to me! Here’s our lavender orpington pullet at 6wks and yesterday at 17 weeks. Her comb at 17 weeks is more comparable to your 3 week old chicken’s, telling me you probably have a boy :)
I’m so sorry to hear that! The more I have learned about chicken keeping, the more certain I am that she did have Mareks. She passed at around 1yr old which seems a little older than usual, but, not impossible. I hope the rest of your flock will be able to thrive despite the virus!
Lulu hatched in August 2020. By the time we bought her from a local feed store in March 2021, she had been badly pecked by other hens and was missing most of the feathers on her back.
From March to September, she had absolutely no feather regrowth. However, things started rapidly improving in...
@ChickensRsmart thank you for the info! Mareks definitely seems possible given the symptoms. Supposedly she was vaccinated against it, but I read that the vaccine isn’t foolproof. Thankfully I’ve seen no similar signs in our other 3 chickens, but I will be very watchful!
8/26 update: Clover passed away naturally today.
My husband felt very strongly about burying her at home rather than taking her to the state lab for necropsy, so we’ll never really know what went wrong. I believe it was some sort of respiratory illness. She was a tough little chicken and she...
8/25 update: after 10 days of oral antibiotics and Terramycin, Clover sadly isn’t showing any signs of improvement. Her eye is still swollen and dilated, she’s still unsteady on her feet, she last laid an egg August 12 (thin shelled and broken), and now she is eating less and less. And her...
Hi @Samroo do you have any updates? Did the weird noises and attacks ever end?
My chickens are going through the same thing. Clover will make this weird noise, and then Annabelle will run over and peck her and drive her away from the flock. Not to blame the victim, but Clover seems to be...
8/15 Update: As of last week Clover started keeping her dilated right eye closed, and it slowly started getting swollen over the course of the week. Another new development- our youngest chicken started attacking Clover anytime she’d get close to the other 3 hens. I’m not sure if she’s trying to...
Hi, thanks for the reply @Wyorp Rock!
We ordered some Poultry Cell and it should be here today. She’s been keeping her dilated eye closed during the day now. I’ve noticed a little head shaking as well, and this morning her droppings were bright yellow (like bile). She doesn’t seem to have any...
