    Barred Rocks feathers turning white

Today I noticed one of my Barred Rocks has an area on her chest where the feathers are much lighter than the rest of her. The area is about two inches wide and four inches long. Any ideas???

frothy foamy material in one of my Rocks eye.

Thanks for your reply. I will check her tomorrow morning and if I don't see it's better I will try an antibiotic. It doesn't get very cold here in southern calif so hoping it's not a respiratory problem. I haven't seen any signs or symptoms today that would indicate a respiratory issue...

frothy foamy material in one of my Rocks eye.

This evening I noticed a whitish foamy looking material in one of my Rocks eyes. She was acting totally normal in every way, eating, running around with the other Rocks, etc. Any ideas? I cleaned the material out with a sterile gauze pad and instilled a drop of opthalmic prednisone that I use...

    Could this be a problem?

Thanks, I will keep the treats to 10-15%. I also give them fresh corn, vegetable greens, pumpkins, cucumbers, etc. Some they will eat, others they don't really seem to like. Kinda like my grandkids.

    Could this be a problem?

Thanks for the information. No runny nose or sneezing, eating and drinking ok so maybe just passed on her treat today? I will start on a layer feed and I started adding oyster shells a few weeks ago so I hope I'm feeding them properly. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

    Could this be a problem?

I give my four "Rocks" a meal worm treat every day and they gobble them up. Today I noticed that three of them did their normal Banzai attack for the worms but one girl just pecked at a couple of worms and then walked away. She seems to be acting normal otherwise. Being that I'm new to raising...

    leg band problem

Sorry about a late reply, been out of state on vacation. I gave up on trying to use anything on their legs, now I just guess who's who and that works for me. They don't care anyway.

keeping my girls cool this hot Southern CA summer

As far as the electric cost, I've had solar electric on my house for ten years so the extra cost to run an A/C unit for a few of the hot days isn't a concern. I tried the water mister, (they all scatter when I turn it on) and as you know we have the mandatory water rationing and they like the...

keeping my girls cool this hot Southern CA summer

Call me crazy but watching my four Barred Rocks panting when the temperature reached 100 + for several days in a row here in Orange County CA. I decided that since I was comfortable in my air conditioned house, why not figure out a way to keep them cool as well. I used some 4" perforated pvc...

    leg band problem

I finally gave up on trying to band them with different colored spiral bandettes ( pointed ends scratched their legs). The colored quick ties looked promising but they still pecked at them. I guess my "girls" are different because they didn't stop pecking at the bands, even after a couple of...

are my hens too young to start eating corn on cob

Thanks, good to know. I also give them a small mealworm treat (a big hit as well) but not too often. Being that I'm a newbie to BYC's I don't want to cause digestive problems.
