Finally. My black austrolorp has started to lay this week. She is nine months old, so a late bloomer I guess.

I have a small (5) mixed backyard flock, and my Golden Comet laid earliest and has been very consistent. Also she is the friendliest of the bunch.

JJ, thanks for the reply. I did look up the topic of daytime raccoons, right here on BYC, and there were quite a few posts on the subject. Most did not believe it was a sure sign of a diseased raccoon, but more likely a juvenile, or mother with pups to feed.

Just got 5 one-month old chickens yesterday. Not sure of breed, three are orangish, two blackish. It was sort of a rescue thing. Someone had to get rid of young chickens because wife of the house was allergic. Not what I had planned to do, but I guess anything's a start.

I saw that your story was covered at the Red Bank Green website. Although the main story did not comment on the mean behavior of those in attendance, there were quite a few comments in support of you. Good luck and I hope things work out in your favor.

You might want to ask this on the New Jersey thread in Social Forums "Who am I? Where are you?". I have not gotten to this point in my chicken experience.

"Coop" is completed, as it was built into part of a storage shed. Still working on 8x10 run, and I hope the weather holds for at least part of the weekend so I can get the final wood framing and door completed.
