chicken with back of head skin ripped off... HELP!

I'll add that this was because I didn't have a sympathetic vetenary clinic, if you do then maybe a trip to them would be a plan. Mine just joked that it'd be chicken dinner tonight! So I had a go myself :)

chicken with back of head skin ripped off... HELP!

I've had a chick with its head pecked off at the back, and she made it to a ripe old age, so while it might look gruesome, it doen't have to mean it's fatal. So is there any skin left to do anything with or is it all gone? What I did was keep her seperate, keep her clean and keep the wound...

    My Chick Hatching All Right?

If he's still shaking and chirping he's probably doing fine. They can take 24 hours or more from pip to hatch. Also I have had chicks hatch out just fine when they were completely out of the incy so don't worry too much. If you put the lid down quickly and the humidity is back up where it...

    chicks are eating pine shavings

I usually use towels for the first week, then chopped straw after that. I have also used large flake pine shavings which seemed to work really well but were a bit expensive compared to the straw.

Help, shell broke, chick still alive

I've had broodys do that, but I always take the crushed egg away because nearly all of them peck at the red bloody bit and kill the chick if left. I've successfully hatched out crushed eggs down my front (which was tricky, but worked! Had to get used to doing everything one handed for a day)...

    Any idea what this is?

Well, this morning all the fluid in the baggy bit has been resorbed and left a little wrinkly bald flap of skin, so baby has gone in with the others :) I kept her seperate while it was full and flopping about because I didn't want any sharp beaks or claws perforating it and causing problems...

    Any idea what this is?

Here's a pic, please ignore how weird my hand looks, it's very hard to hold a wriggly chick and take a photo at the same time. The watery sack has shunk back to a tiny flap this morning, so But it's an odd thing for sure!

    Any idea what this is?

Last night I had a little wellsummer bantam cross hatch out, but she has a very strange thing I've never seen before. She has what looks like a little bag of water in a 'flap' to the left hand side of her bum, it's sort of baggy and loose, not stretched tight. It's nowhere near the navel or...

    malformed chick

My theory on this is give it a little time, unless it's actually suffering. I've had some oddbods who turned into healthy happy chicks. I had one that had the back of her head pecked out (you could see the brain ) but with some superglue, tender loving care and time to heal on her own she made...

    Hen on duck eggs

I've had two banties hatch duck eggs this year, they did just fine :) I dripped a little bit of water on every three days or so, turned them once a day to be sure they had at least a bit of a turn, and then left mama banty to it. I'm lucky that I have such long suffering mamas, they grumble a...

EMERGENCY: Hen's hatching chick, shell crunched

Aww I'm so pleased it all worked out! One of my mama hens has been doing exactly the same thing, crushing the shells. I've lost 5 babies at point of hatch, another five at various stages on incubation, and helped out all but three of the others. She's a new mum, never hatched before so I wonder...

    please help

Sounds good You'd definitely be able to tell if it was innards, looks totally different from the yellowish yolk sack that sometimes pokes out a bit. If he's poddling about like a normal chick sounds like he should be a good'un :)

    Deformed chick

Just a thought, but since chicks are sort of rubbery for the first day or two, is there any way to straighten that little beak up a wee bit? Like you can for curled feet etc.... I wouldn't know how, but there might be a way? I've had several differently abled chooks and dooks (I'm soft...

    please help

Is the cord still attatched to the shell? I had one little peeper hatch like that and drag some of his insides out because he was struggling and pulling at it (don't mean to scare you, just offering some experience!) so if he's still stuck to the shell by the cord, either try pinching the cord...

    Should I steal a friend?

Yep I'd grab him up a friend or two :) Whenever I've had just one little guy hatch I've always tried to get a little pal for it. I hatched a single runner drake a couple of years ago (my incubator broke, spiked up to 120F, then gave up, I thought I was very lucky to have even that little one...
