How much "scratch" should I feed my chickens?

I have 9 Plymouth Rock Hens and 1 rooster. They are all approximately 7 months old and the hens are laying. They have constant access to a 18% layer ration and free-range. I have been giving them one cup of scratch in the morning when I let them out of the coop and then another cup at night...

Stick with Plymouth Rocks or Try a Broodier Breed?

I have nine 20 week old Plymouth Rock hens (Barred, White & Partridge) that have just started laying. I want to have the experience of raising baby chicks so plan to add a rooster and maybe a couple of additional hens next spring. Here are my questions: I am thinking about adding Buff...

Comment by 'rhschulz2000' in item 'Australorp'

I am fairly new to the chicken thing, having only raised my 9 Plymouth Rocks since this March. I am very interested in getting some Australorp, primarily to be able to raise chicks. Would be interested in anyone comments about their boodiness, mothering, etc. Bob

First egg at 16 weeks. Is that unusual?

I was surprised to find a small but perfectly formed egg on my coop floor yesterday. None of the nine 16 week old Plymouth Rock hens have come forward to claim ownership, but wondered how unusual this is, since I understood that it is usually 20-24 weeks before they start laying.

15 Weeks Old and Not Roosting at Night

My nine Plymouth Rocks that just turned 15 weeks old, still huddle in a corner of the coop at night rather than on the roost. The roost is 18 inches off the floor and they do sit on it during the day sometimes. I was planning on moving it higher once they started roosting on it a night. Does...

    Feather Plucking Problem

I am a first-time chicken owner, and have nine 12 week old Plymouth Rocks. Three white, three barred and three partridge (brown). The other six birds have started picking out the feathers on the three partridges, just behind the saddle. One bird they have gotten down to the skin. They seem...

If anyone has a Mcmurry Coop Controller (Automatic Door Opener), I would be very interested in hearing from you regarding your level of satisfaction with the product. I am considering purchasing one, but know there are competing products on the market. Thanks, Bob

Weird Feathering on my Barred Plymouth Rock Chick - Normal? Ok?

I have 9 Plymouth Rock chicks that are now 4 and a half weeks old. 8 of them have feathered out fine, but one of the Barred Plymouth Rocks still has a lot of grey fuzz with partial feathering on other parts of her body. Is this normal, ok? Otherwise she is acting and feeding just fine...

    Brooder and Roost Questions

Thanks so much for your response. I am in Castle Rock, CO so not very far from you. As you know we have been having unseasonably warm weather, but that could change very quickly. Good luck with your babies. Bob

    Brooder and Roost Questions

I am new to the chicken world and my 9 Plymouth Rock females are 3 weeks old and growing fast. They are currently in a 75 gal Rubbermaid stock tank. My two questions are this. I know I am supposed to keep them in the brooder for 6-8 weeks, but since they are getting really rambunctious in the...
