We are needing to leave town for a couple weeks. We have chickens that are about 12 weeks old and some that are about 6 weeks old. They are used to getting out in the run all day long (divided from each other of course). I am concerned about what would happen if they had to stay in the coop...
What we decided was to completely take the bars from the nest boxes. We were actually able to use them over the poop shelf for the actual roosts. The chickens get in the boxes just fine without the bars.
I have two cornish rocks that are four weeks old. They are huge! I have started taking their food away at night and no light in the house, so they seem to sleep. I have also, in the last two days, been letting them out to have some free range time. However, one more than the other, has the...
What do you think the outcome would be if I quarantined this roo for a lil while, especially while the chicks are out in the run? I am trying to combine some younger chicks. He definitely already shows aggression (whose boss) to these by walking on top of their cage trying to peck them? I...
I have a roo that is part Maran, part who knows from what I can gather. He is about 10 weeks old and DEFINITELY rules the roost! In the last couple of days he has started biting the other chickens. They were all raised together. One other is a roo like the biter. The others are Aracauna...
I believe I am going to have trouble adding my dozen chicks to the other "older" six chicks... A smaller chick got out of the brooder (I guess) yesterday. I just happened to go out to the coop and caught the largest rooster cornering the lil thing and trying to kill it....I am freaked out about...
Can anyone tell what this might be? It is not the best pic, however, it resembles a cut or lil tear-like wound. I have searched my health handbook on chickens and this website and have come up with nothing close to concrete as to what it might be..it is on both feet
Thanks for the info Ridgerunner. I did actually put a lil roost in the brooder(box), as a couple of the birds seemed to want to always be on the top of the box. I do not know if they used it at night or just when I was in the coop?
Seems like an exhausting process from what I saw them doing...
Since putting our chicks into the coop (out of the brooder), every morning I go out to check on them I have found poo in the front corner. I found it strange, but just thought they likened that place to "go". Went out to the coop last night at dusk (to check on the new chicks), only to find my...
Love the pics....I believe you have answered my ? about "name that breed"... We have what looks like your Maran and YEP he is a Roo and the cuddliest, nosiest one of the bunch
Local TSC only getting a couple breeds (and very few) every week....Meyer Hatchery is practically sold out until June (in order to be able to get EE, Wyandotte and BR at the same time...NEED CHICKS....trying to be able to get them all at the same time to avoid issues of age difference, etc!
TSC only got in these two breeds this week? Was so looking forward to getting some new babies today However, these are not the breeds I had in mind, BUT willing to try if they are friendly, calm, good egg layers, etc....
Anyone have these and would like to share your experience? Comments...
