6 Laying Hens Need a New Home! Sonoma County, CA

I have 6 laying hens that need a new home. It breaks my heart, but it is the best for them. Looking for someone who wants them as laying hens. They were hatched end of June/ beginning of July 2012 so they are just at 2 years old. They are: 3 Black Jersey Giants 2 Buff Orpingtons 1 Ameraucana...

Not roosting and drinking water like she'll never have any again

Okay, read a bit about it, don't think that's the case. Hubs went out to check on her and she's roosting. Weird chicken. We'll keep an eye on her I guess just in case this is the start of something.

Not roosting and drinking water like she'll never have any again

My husband just came in from checking on the chickens and said that one of our Buff Orpingtons is not roosting (it's almost 7pm and has been dark for a while now) and is drinking water like mad. I have a cooler that feeds down into PVC pipes with chicken nipples in it for their water. She's...

Trying to understand needed coop size

Cute coop!! Do you clip their wings? I'm concerned about them flying over my fence (it's at least 6 ft, but I need to measure) into the neighbors yard who do have dogs.

Trying to understand needed coop size

Awesome! Thanks! The design we have drawn up right now is 2 SF per bird, but they'll have a lot of space outside during the day.

My chicks don't want to go outside!!

Well, since I started raising chicks at the beginning of July, I have learned the meaning of "You're just chicken." My chicks scare at EVERYTHING! It's quite funny actually. Anyway, I'm thinking they've gotten comfortable in the coop and just haven't gotten the nerve to go out. Can you take...

Wire on inside or outside of coop??

I'm new to this too, but it would seem to me that if the wire is on the outside, predators, like raccoons, would have an easier time pulling the wire back to get into the coop. The coops at the local feed store had the wire on the inside and then edges covered with wood trim like you said.

Trying to understand needed coop size

Haha! Our backyard is nothing but crabgrass and leaves, so if they scratch it bare, all the better! And yes, we live in an area that they can access the run/yard year round. Thanks for the info! Another question, and it might be a 'duh' question - We have plenty of shade and sun in the...

Trying to understand needed coop size

Hmmm.... Since I have to keep size for moving in mind, Is there any reason, I can't build two coops with access to the same run? Would I need to separate the hens in each coop or let them figure it out?

Trying to understand needed coop size

I've done a lot of reading about coop sizes, but I still don't have my specific question answered. I've seen needed coop size ranging from 2 - 4 sq ft per bird. Is that size coop AND run or just coop? Can I have a smaller coop if I have a large run (like possibly my whole backyard)? I have...
