    Alaskan Woods Coop

First and foremost, many thanks to JackE, Howard E, Cholland, and pretty much anyone else that has posted about how to build your Woods coop. I probably referenced your posts or articles and your contributions have been invaluable. There's not much I will say to add to the discussion of how...

Crazy gun toting neighbour and his dogs

This is an interesting thread - and a tricky situation. Here's my 2 cents - if you like shooting, would you ever consider taking Benjamin Franklin's advice by asking a favor of your neighbor - in this case, something like "Hey, I hear you shooting out here quite a bit. I love shooting but I...

Woods coop for cold weather/no sun?

If I could I would seriously consider it, but I don't have the space there to comply with local jurisdictions. I also live in a part of town where I would have serious concerns about chickens not being stolen/abused/whatever by people passing through. I love my immediate neighbors, but there...

Woods coop for cold weather/no sun?

I forgot to write earlier - I was buying something from a guy on Craigslist in town last summer and noticed chickens in his backyard. He told me they sleep in his big pine tree year round! They got the chickens from family with little notice, so they didn't have anything prepared. The...

Woods coop for cold weather/no sun?

I have read a lot of your posts and was hoping you'd reply - thank you! If I had a southern exposure in my backyard I would go for it, but with zero direct sunlight... It just seems like I'd be rolling the dice. I read the Woods book a while ago when I was doing my initial research and the...

Woods coop for cold weather/no sun?

Thanks for the detailed answer! Definitely some good advice there. Thankfully Anchorage is pretty mild compared to the temps you're talking about. If I was up in Fairbanks I would be in an environment closer to yours... Regardless, I appreciate your insight, and some of it is applicable -...

Woods coop for cold weather/no sun?

Oh yeah, it'll definitely be homemade. Just a question of determining which type of coop is better for cold weather. I do have an old shed in my backyard, but I kind of need it as a storage shed and I'm not sure it would even stand up to any modifications if I did want to use it as a coop.

Woods coop for cold weather/no sun?

Hello, My wife and I are planning on getting about a dozen chicks this coming spring in Anchorage, AK. I had read about the Woods coop and was excited about building one in the spring until I realized that our backyard doesn't get any direct sunlight during the winter. I was hoping we'd get...
