Chicken Roosting Alone in the WINTER OK? Lonely? :)

I have 8 hens that are all social with one another, but at night, 7 go inside to roost and one stays outside on the top lid of a nesting box. She stays outside in light rain, during the summer and winter, but seems to go inside during snows.

    Brooding hen?

I have a young Wyandotte that lays her eggs in a place outside the nesting box. Two days ago she was squatting in the area that she lays her eggs. I picked her up and saw that she was sitting on an egg. I'm assuming that she is brooding since she has been squatting for so long, acts protective...

    Chicken with runny stool...

Have ten 7-month old hens. Someone has stool that is dark in color and runny. Can't figure out who is the owner of it, but all hens are doing well, eating, running around, etc..... Any thoughts on how to treat the owner of the stool, as well as if it is best to treat all. If so, what should I...

    Automatic watering suggestions

I use the Little Giant with a rain barrel system and it feeds the waterer by gravity. Since it's gravity feed, the pressure generated from the height of the rain barrel to the actual waterer, the pressure will be low. With my system it is slow to fill up, but once it is at the level I adjusted...

    Automatic watering suggestions

The Little Giant does NOT run water continuously. It will fill up to a specified level (that you adjust). It has a valve that allows you to adjust the water level in the small water bowl. As the water is being used, it will drip more water into the bowl. The water connection comes in from...

    Automatic watering suggestions

I have the same issue..... no water at the site but needed to make a water system that would not require me to carry it to the area. I went with the Little Giant automatic waterer and connected it to a rain barrel (via pvc pipe). Works great.

    Finding the nesting boxes.....

If the hens have not been up to the nesting boxes, how will they actually find them or even see the golf ball "eggs"?

Creative Ways to Fill Feed and Water

The Little Giant was made for use with a hose- it just needs to be mounted so the hose can connect to the op of it. I do remember seeing some sort of tripod, but I mounted it to the inside of the coop. I am in NC- not too bad during the winter, but the PVC connectors don't handle freezing well.

    Finding the nesting boxes.....

I have 10 pullets that could start laying in a couple of weeks.... They are free-range, always go to their coop at night, to eat and to drink. They all roost together huddled in a corner. Their nesting boxes are above them and they have to go up a ladder to get to them. Unfortunately, I...

Creative Ways to Fill Feed and Water

My chickens are a good way from water so I went with a rain barrel setup. The goat shed is in one area of the fenced in "yard" and the rain barrel is set up to get roof drainage from there. I have an underground pipe to the coop and use a Little Giant 2500 Automatic Poultry Bird Waterer...
