Well after going back through jims right. If your not looking for size I would go with a heritage breed fro the reproduction aspect but it all depends on your needs. We will be getting some Bourbon Reds in the spring. I will keep looking to see if I can find anything through the sites I have...

    Chicken space!

I allow 10 square feet per chicken in the run and 3 square feet per in the coop. The more room you give the happier they will be.

    How loud are chicks?

We have thirty ranging from a six weeks to a year old and it not too bad. Our rooster is a little loud but not bad and the hens aren't loud at all. The chicks were getting louder in the brooder but it wasn't ear piercing. If you want quiet chickens stick with hens but you wouldn't have fertile...

    Coop floor?

We also use linoleum over plywood and it works great. We found a 6 x 8 sheet at Lowe's on clearance for $11. It's not the prettiest thing but does the trick. Makes cleanup very easy.

I adopted that other family of chickens-A funny thing for a change

We just introduced a rooster and five hens. The hens weren't a problem but we were leery of the rooster. We put him in a cage by himself in the run with all the others for a day and haven't had any problems since we let him out. From my experience it seems its up to the birds on how long they...

First night out of the house-SUCCESS!

Congrats. I just put ours out three days ago and they are being a little difficult. They don't want to roost. They are sleeping on the floor of the coop. They don't go outside in the morning until we crawl in the coop and persuade them. Then when outside they don't want to come back into the...

Ladder type roost or roosting shelf pros and cons

I use a ladder type roost with 2 x 4's wide side up and haven't had any problems except they like to roost on the leftover square hay bale I leave in there. Lol. But no fighting issues with ladder roost.

    Opinions on McMurray

I have ordered from them once. I ordered 22 EE's and four barred rocks. We lost one the second day and two ended up with crooked beak. All EE's but I sent an email after we found out and they refunded the price the next day with a prompt email back. There customer service impressed me and...

    BBW turkey info

I have been researching turkeys in general quite a bit lately and the best information I have found has been posts on here. Everything gets contradicting the more I've looked on the internet and Atleast here you get quite a few people that have been raising them. Sorry not much help. I will...

how much roof overhang on open air coop

We have 2 foot overhang on ours and would not change it. It gives extra room for cleaning and egg collecting in bad weather (Louisiana) and really helps keep the inside better protected against wind blown rain. I would definitely recomend 2 foot.

    turkeys close to chickens

I plan on free ranging them but alternating days. Chickens one day and turkeys the next. I am trying to figure out how I can free range them in separate areas also to help minimize the risk of anything. I am hoping my plan for the turkey pen is big enough. 10 x 20 with a 4 x 5 coop for...

    turkeys close to chickens

I have a 16 x 24 chicken yard with a 6 x 8 coop. I plan on building two 10 x 20 yards with 4 x 5 coops of the back side for 5-6 turkeys in each. They will be divided by plywood between the chickens and turkeys. Is this gonna be a problem. I know there hasn't been an issue with blackhead in...
