After looking at many many pictures of ( islandic chickens ) .... Most of them appear to be a varied mix of all breeds.
I have noted crosses between ( Spanish white face, Wyandot , Welsumer, and various others.
This would appear to be Peaple trying to push up there limeted stock and color...
On average... We here in the north north.. Run about -25.. 30 'c ... Snow is good, but nothing beats warm water once a day, if possible .
I will add snow daily to the pens so the birds have a choice after the water freezes during our cold snaps..!
All animals and birds require water at some...
Old rule of thumb for mites..., dip the birds legs in the solution of motor oil. This will kill all mites!
Also ... Spray the oil into all joints and crevices within the coop area. I generally use a louse powder for lice and mites located within the birds feathers by applying it to the coops...
Rats... Yup, you got a headache for sure. You are on the win win side for rat control, as they are extremely cautious animals. If they are coming and eating the poison ... It will only be a matter of time and all will settle down. This all depends on how many rats you have . Remove all feed...
Hello every one. Looking for some info on bantam eggs. Looking to purchase two old English game hens and Wyandotte hens. What would the average ( egg a day ) be per breed.
Good morning to all. Sorry for your troubles with the cold.
I'm in Alberta , Canada ... And cold... -31 ugh .
I have smaller ( box type ) buildings for my chicken house.
( 4x4x8 )... I found that smaller buildings hold the warmth from the birds better as there roost is closer to the ceiling...
Ummm .. Barred rocks.. Had to give this some thought?
I think it may have something to due with the barring.
A group of birds on the move can play with your optical perceptions (black and white )... Something like a spinning wheel on a stick. For this guy... The show birds , with their finer...
Hi... I first started with show type barred rocks. I absolutely loved them. I even had bantam barred Cochins.
Even did well in the shows...
Too pick a favorite breed... (Almost mission impossible)..
So many breeds... All have their special traits.
I had over the years...
Marans, barnvelders...
Good morning. In response to Turkmen x leghorn.
The Turken gene is a dominant one. This bird has less feathers than the average bird and is used to some extent in the Broiler industry.
If your goal is to produce more eggs... A commercial type leghorn hen would be the best.
The Turken has...
Babyboss, thanks for the reply... Gump said it best!
Life's a box of chocolates, .... The mind wonders !
I have white silkies as well..
They do well here... The walnut comb could be handy.
If I am to have a chicken dinner... The skin color would not bother me...as they are now running...
Totally awesome. Thanks for doing this... Single comb breeds take a kicking up here... Frost bite/ frozen...
I will be focusing on all combs but single, not sure how a clear " v " would hold up. ? I will need a few single comb hens to start... Then retain their chicklets for further development...
Hybrids... Can be interesting. If done with purpose can be very rewarding. I came into possession of a trio of old English game x black rose comb cross . Pure white. Roo was black.. These birds are awesome. They all have dads rose comb. I like this so much that I will work with this line and see...
Good morning. I also had problems in the past. I will try this again with afternoon training. Hopefully... The hawks are fed already. I'm currently working on Dewlop and Dutch high flyers . Will not fly my birds until I have the numbers up" , cannot afford to lose my breeding stock at this time...
