Wonderful job! We don't have ele. to our coop and am wondering about your solar system. Did you buy a kit or do you have plans? Love the rain barrel, too. Go Green!

That was a great story of Chicken Little and Jess. What a wonderful childhood for Jess!

I beg to differ with Whittni 8/5/13 at 10:03pmFlagLooks good. One suggestion: your roosting bar is on the wide side, its better to have the shorter side pointing up. Everything I have read says the 4" side is facing up! That way the toes don't hang over the edge and get cold or frost-bit...

I have 3 Silkies (along with my standard breeds) and I call these little girls fairies, named them Tinkerbell, Periwinkle and Meriweather (as in Disney); they act like little fairies instead of chickens. Sweet!

    Wasp sting on rooster???

It took a week but Sparrow, my roo, is recovering! I had to give him injectable steroid and hand feed him, plus force fluids for 3 days but he made it! Even when his swelling was the worst and his breathing was very labored his eyes remained clear and bright so he never seemed 'sick', just...

As you can tell by my avatar picture...I love Easter Eggers! The feed store told me they were Americauna but I've learned they are EE's. I have a flock of 8 birds, 2 each of 4 breeds. The EE's were the first to do everything, including always going to roost first each evening, and calling all...

I have 2 Barred Rock in my flock of 8 chicks that are about 16 weeks old. One of my 'girls' turned out to be a roo, a Barred Rock rooster! He is the sweetest thing in the world, and the BR hen appears to be his favorite. When she isn't hanging with her roo she is sitting in my lap. I love my...

I know exactly how you feel! I can go and sit with my chickens who always have a calming effect on me. Wait until you have teenagers! Thanks for your sweet post.

    Wasp sting on rooster???

Thanks, California Farm Girl. Sparrow, our young Barred Rock roo, seems to have responded well to the antihistamine. After giving him his meds he will NOT let me near him - ha - but I can see he's no longer mouth breathing and he's walking around. He does not look like he's dying, in fact he...

    Wasp sting on rooster???

My 4 month old, very sweet rooster apparently got stung by a wasp or something. I can't see any marks on him. I picked him up and held him and noticed he was mouth breathing and it sounds like snoring. His face, head, neck and chest are swollen! I came in and read some posts about giving him...

What did your chickens do today?

This afternoon I went out to sit with our small, young flock. I have 2 of each breed: Buff O's, RIR, Easter Eggers and Plymouth Barred Rock. And, yes, my breeds do love to hang together. So my sweet Barred Rock rooster, Sparrow(15 weeks) was sitting on my lap and the hen, Henri Beaker (11...

Help with color of silkie chick

Wow! I've been trying to find answers about the future color of my silkie babies with no luck. When I got them at the feed store I got one yellow, one black and one gray. Now, at 4 weeks, the yellow is getting a lot of brown, the black is getting a gray head, and the gray is turning black...
