I am coming across mixed info on the 'severity' of the crowing in late caponizations.
If it doesn't reverse the behaviour, making it less frequent and less loud is still a benefit. The question (for me) is how much lesser in frequency - both time- and noise-wise - can be expected.
I am fishing...
Thank you for unearthing these threads! Very interesting!
As for the invasive nature of the surgery: yes, I understand that. Same goes for the spaying of female companion animals which is (thankfully) pretty standard.
With that said, after reading through the article on caponizing adult birds...
I would love to hear back from people who had male chickens successfully caponized (castrated - with no 'slips') after they had started crowing. Has the surgery made an impact on their vocalizations over time? Did it impact their overall look, reversing some of their dimorphism (namely their...
I appreciate the offer and would take you up on it in a heartbeat - - - if I were located on the west coast... 😔 Unfortunately we have 3800 miles between us (or 6200 km ;))...
Might I ask: where are you located? 😅
Seriously... if you were a day's drive away....
So all pictures show capons, eh? They are amazing birds and look - as it has been said many times - like large/oversized hens. (Love the picture of them all huddled together!)
With regards to the 1 time you...
Wow... How did you muster the courage for this?
You are obviously also not sedating/anesthetizing the birds and I understand that this is usual for castrations done outside the office of a vet - but I admit that I find that part hard to 'overcome' (- which is more an emotional response than an...
In my case, the crowing is still happening only occasionally in my 3-months old roos... and I am trying to keep it that way with a few interventions until my exotic vet will have received a set of instruments that are on backorder.
Surgery is scheduled 3 weeks from now when everyone is back form...
In case this reaches you, do you have any knowledge if a crowing rooster. caponized at around 4 months of age and crowing already for a few weeks, will eventually cease or at least lessen his crowing again?
OMG, thank you so very much for this comprehensive reply!
Mine are bantams and a Mille Fleur rooster is the 1 I will need to get used to it ideally asap... 2 Ameraucana bantams are next...
I am generally familiar with the reaction of animals to harnesses (or anything strapped onto their...
Hi there! I am following you to this thread because of another post many years ago in which you mentioned your successful use of (anti-) crow collars. Can you please share with me the type your use(d)?
Yes, I understand that the original intention was (mostly) for culinary reasons... The part that I find interesting is that, apparently, some capons develop 'motherly' (fatherly?) instincts, meaning: becoming not just tolerant of chicks but even protective, taking on their nurturing/raising.
I...
Thank you for sharing this! You are confirming my suspicion that bantams mature earlier. Thankfully the vet I am talking to also came to the realization that the castration/caponization has to happen a whole lot earlier... So we are trying to get this done within the 6-8 weeks timeframe that...
