As long as the spacing is large enough to stick her head through and retract it easily, I don’t see a problem re: bar spacing - but larger than 3x3 would be better as it allows room for toys etc…
Since you posted over 2 months ago, what did you end up getting?
Seriously?
I am floored that there’s a breeder out there who would even consider selling 1 lonely chick to a complete novice. This is disturbingly irresponsible. I only hope that the poster reconsidered this approach.
Do your quails have access to a dustbath? Do they have a platform where their feet can recover from the metal wire? Are you providing any form of ‘enrichment’?
there is 1 thing i learned from past mistakes where a watchdog attacked and killed a chicken: i took the dead bird and whacked the dog with it.
i am guessing that the (dead) bird attacking back left a lasting impression or maybe he simply got the message that i was not impressed. in any event...
although this is years old, i'd like to add my 2 cents...
an aspirin at the recommended dosage will most likely only reduce the pain. also - movement will help the healing process & get nutrients to the injured site.

thank you, sumi, for this very comprehensive overview! (which i saved as a PDF... :))
i, too, have a question... can you please clarify whether a 2% rate of such odd shaped eggs can be deemed normal or is that already a cause for concern?
we feed standard layer feed, offer additional mixed...

she is quite a sweet girl. a bit skittish but very sweet.
i hope for this being an injury which might heal.
(and in that case [an injury] i am thinking of giving her a baby aspirin.)
the sudden onset does make me wonder if this is due to an accident. some of my birds roost very high up and she might have tried to reach that as well (and injured her back in the process) or maybe 1 landed on her back when it flew down. :idunno grasping for straws....
as for spondylopathy, i...
yes, the egg came from my chickens and stems from the same parent birds as many other chicks that have been raised by their mother hens without any issues.
however, this chick was a bit of an unplanned parenthood and has no siblings but 3 (bantam) moms who all cared for it (rather lovingly and...
@ gray farms: just yesterday, the spine had just the right length and the chicken was walking like any other... ;) so no, i really don't think a short spine is to blame.
