I run deep litter in coop and run , with dirt floors . Mess is no problem and some dampness brings worms in the litter , and hens learn quick . In summer I wet the litter when it dries , to help in the composting . The food and water is inside the coop .OH I've seen chicken swallow a mouse...
Deep liter system is like mulch pile , witch creates it's own heat hens love it in winter, and love to scratch for the worms and bugs that lives there. Concrete absorbs urine smells witch is detrimental to your hens .
The only reason I use golf balls or fake eggs is for the black snakes that steal eggs . My coop floors are dirt , so I use the deep litter system , and straw in nest boxes .
Grass, leaves and sawdust is great . I don't add anything in the mix and my hen area don't smell . For dusting purposes I have a box (with no bottom ) filled 1/3 with sand and DE for dusting .My box is 2 X 4 ft. My chicken love to scratch in the run and coop , and dust in the box . OH the dust...

BROODY I want . They are considered by me as a doomsday chicken , lay eggs fairly well , go broody to multiply , and plenty of meat on bone. I let one hen to brood and take the eggs away ,every day from others .
Muscovy is not in the mallard family . The meat is more like veal , very tasty .I cooked them , up to a yr. old , in a covered roasting pan with a little bit of water for humidity at 350 .
