Hey sorry about late update: vet likely to put her down.
Vet thinks it is cancer, took a sample. She's on pain medication and some anti-inflammatories.
Hello All,
I've got a lovely young girl (almost a year old) who I only today noticed has a massive, ugly and painful looking (but apparently not so much to touch) lump on her neck. It's different to the crop, which is much lower down and easy to feel, and travels all the way around her neck. It...
It seems like an affectionate thing - they tend to be a bit more pointed otherwise in my experience.
A couple of my roosters were very competitive about who could steal whatever I was eating when I went outside for a while, and they really got optimistic about teeth - that's pretty much the only...
Sorry if this is unnecessary bumping:
It wasn't really practical to go to a vet specialising. I do think he had Marek's, we did isolate him, I've been careful to bleach shoes and things to try to keep it from spreading though I think the others probably would have been exposed before I moved...
Last update:
Roo died last night. He'd been getting weaker each day for the past week. It was all too much.
Just thought I'd post the conclusion to the saga.
He was a lovely boy.
Just thought I'd post an update:
Roo's still alive, not really kicking, but he's perked up a bit since the tube feeding started.
It's all too hard to tell if he'll be able to recover, but he's held on this long - I'm probably more optimistic than I should be, but every day is a small wonder...
Great advice thank you!
First try he wasn't very happy, but I tried again today and he was really good and it seemed to help. He's still pretty with it, guess he's really strong willed. Still paralysed in his legs though and depth perception seems very off.
Would never have considered tubing him...
Sorry, on my phone I forget all the points I should answer. I'm in Australia. I've had a look at some videos and I've got a tube but not a big syringe so I'll try and get one from a chemist.
I'm not sure about a liquid parrot diet, the nearest seller is a bit far for me.
I'm scared of...
He's really having difficulty picking at anything now, he seems hungry and enthusiastic to try but he can't hold onto to tear into anything with his beak.
Is tube feeding an option?
He still seems to be fairly alert, otherwise I wouldn't even consider it.
Next update:
He had a bad day yesterday, but a better one today. I made him an omelette with some seeds and grit, and he had about half - he prefers just the egg. He didn't drink much, but I've been drip feeding him a couple of drops as much as possible. He's had a lot of sunflower seeds...
I will update tomorrow if there are any changes. He had a go at some egg and some water, but I think he might have drank too fast and got some down the wrong pipe because he started spluttering quite significantly. It wouldn't have been much, but he's just generally making very weak, laboured...
Ah ok. He's looking much worse today, and doesn't seem to want to eat. He's really not going for water, either.
I'm just trying to make him comfortable.
No, not a lump, he's had a lot of neck feathers come out. That's a bald spot. I thought the sores and enlarged follicles (is that what they're called?) were signs of Marek's.
The beak looks ok - he hasn't been doing it as much today, but he's not drinking much at all. I'm trying to dropper some...
Update time:
He had a good couple of hours outside, was gardening next to him and had one of the chickens he came with (we had 4 little ones given to us, including him when they were just weeks old about 7 1/2 months ago) have a bit of scratch close by. He perked up a lot and walked a few steps...
