6 week old Chick, Sleepy, Hunched not eating treats - help please!

Thanks, 5Leepy, for being with me through that whole thing...to think I was going to put her down!!! My other chick is one of my strongest, but I just now noticed that she had her mouth open to breath every once in a while (she's not hot), and she's swiping her beak on the ground over and over...

Final update: Dreamer is WELL!!! She is a normal chicken in every way! She's smaller than the flock, but just as funny and aggressive and excited to be a chicken. Thank you all for your help! (Think I have a little one with a cold now, but I'll start a new strand for her.) Cheers!!

Morning update! After a day inside with me, cuddling (my husband was not amused) and warm, and the night with her buddies out in the hen house (with a heat lamp), Dreamer seems to be on the mend!! She's off the meds, she's already had two huge poops (green, but solid with white caps -does...

Yes! The vitamins...and this is so she can get more energy to eat and drink? After just an hour inside with me she is eating. Still not drinking and no poop. She does give a slight shake of her head every so often.

So, I have no idea what's up with my sweet chick, but she's on her last legs. She still refuses to drink water, but will peck around when roused completely awake...otherwise, she stands still, on her feet, fluffed up, in a dead sleep. She's also taken to trotting around behind our Orpingtons...

    chick puffed & head shaking

Did you ever figure out what was up with your chick? Sounds a lot like an issue I have with one of mine right now - not wanting to lay down to sleep, but sleeping much of the day, puffed up.

Morning update for all you sweet new friends helping us! Dreamer is alive and pretty much the same, although she ran around with the crazy girls when I took them out this morning, attempted a bit of pecking the ground and actually eating! this morning. She still doesn't love the mash, but she...

Thank you all so much for your advice! Here's where we are so far: Today Dreamer ate! sometime after 3pm, I did the mash + water again and added some apple cider vinegar. She ate hungrily then reverted to her regular stand, hunch and sleep pattern. Tried to give her more mash before I put...

No, she's never been wormed. She's almost 7 weeks old - is that necessary? I'll do it right away for all of them, if so... She hadn't been pooping - not eating. Is the dusting for lice? And the medicine...to treat what? Would it be unusual that she is the only one affected? Thanks for...

And at this point her breastbone is insanely protruding - could I still feel the crop?

I have no idea if the crop is enlarged...wouldn't know it if I felt it. That was my initial feeling about her illness, but the hunched up look and the sleeping didn't seem to be consistant. She wasn't shaking her head or anything. They get chick crumbles and green stuff from the yard and garden.

Thank you, 5Leepy, I tried the chick feed + water this morning and tried to hand feed it to her with no avail. It's almost as if she WANTS to eat, but can't swallow or something... She has shown interest today, in food and clover/lettuce. She pecked at the ground a few times, and even...

Just looked it up here and there is already a great discussion about humane ways to put a chick down. I found a good discussion here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/606026/humane-way-to-put-down-chick I'm cringing at having to do anything...but she seems so lethargic and sleeping and I...

I will start a new thread and see what kind of discussion we get. I know this won't be my only experience with helping a chick die humanely. Thank you for your response.

Update on Dreamer- She is definitely weaker today - still standing, and when spoken to or jostled, she responds like a normal chick. She hasn't eaten now, for 4 days. I tried to feed her mash mixed with boiled water today, but she had absolutely no interest. She won't let me feed her the...
