    letting chicks into the run

They will figure it out, probably not for a day or two, but they will. Good luck and if you can, post some pix.

    When to introduce

I have my chickies in an appliance box. Looks like I will need to score another box (there are 9 chickies in this little 'big' box). Love the chickie condo idea, and the cheese cloth is a great idea, TNX!

    letting chicks into the run

I think what you have in mind will work real good. The one thing you mentioned that I would change/fix is the steep ramp. Would there be any way that you could build a small landing for that steep ramp and then add another ramp from the ground up to the landing? This is why we big people have...

    Baby chicks outside

UPDATE: The "chicky boyz" are doing great outside in their box. It is quite entertaining to lay beside the box and talk to them and watch them wrestle over any little bug that happens to fall in the box. A young grasshopper bounced off me and down into the box. His fate was sealed! The chicky...

    Baby chicks outside

I will be bringing them in for a few more weeks at nite. I have to construct a "social pen" inside the run so that the hens will introduce themselves for a week or so. After that, I will keep them in the coop for a week so they know thats where they go to sleep and be safe. Then hopefully in abt...

    Baby chicks outside

Thats whats cool abt the box, it can be moved anywhere. They will be in the grass tomorrow. Today was their first day out and they did very well with it. What I liked abt it was that I was able to finally clean out their indoor brooder box. I have paper towels down and change them out at least...

    Baby chicks outside

I have read several articles on transition of baby chicks from indoors to outdoors (incubated/brooder chicks indoors). My chicks are just 10 days old. It is warm outside and if it is too cool, I won't take them out. So I built a box 4x2.5 and used a piece of ply wood to cover one end so that...

    Chicken Coop Automation

Thats kinda cool! Luckily for me, my coop is far enough from the house that there is no electricity out there. That means I have to get up and go down there to check on the chicky bois. It gets me out of the house and at my age anymore, I need that. I do like your rain barrel idea tho.

How long do I need a heat lamp for?

Heating pad cave system? Never heard of that. Sounds like it might be better than a heat lamp. I suspect this heat lamp is gonna be too hot.

    Our first coop

Here is a pic of the coop opened for ventilation...before final paint Looks kinda cool don't it I don't have any pix yet of the roosting dowels inside, but I had a piece of wooden closet dowel and a couple of 2x4s that I set up a roost for the Chicky Bois. I also made a ramp so that...

    Our first coop

So now it is time to paint so I painted the coop the same color as the house, it has to match you know. I left the inside of the window covers primer white, makes it easier to see from the house to confirm that I opened up the coop.

    Our first coop

My next project was a shade/shelter for the chicky bois. Real simple design..some treated 2x4s cut on 45*..one sheet of plywood ripped down the middle..painted..this is a dual purpose structure, provides the shade and shelter, and it also helps to hold up and support the chicken wire "lid" I...

    Our first coop

So, as you can see, I painted it with white primer for now and I was actually impressed that it came out so good. So now, I need to put in a "hen door"..this will let them our into the run, which was real simple to do, steel T posts, chicken wire and plastic zip ties. My idea for a hen door...

    Our first coop

So I get the coop home and for the life of me, I had a hard time trying to figure out how I was going to utilize the coop. Did some repair on the bottom of the frames, all was well and ready to reassemble. I then get the bright idea, just cover it with plywood! I hinged the backside and two...
