    Australorps breed Thread

We hatched Black Australorps eggs 9 weeks ago. After our Welsummer hatch that only netted 4 hens out of 11 chicks, it looks like we have 6 Australorps pullets out of 10 chicks that hatched. A much happier ratio! I decided to only keep one Welsummer rooster and will not be keeping an Australorp...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Mainly disposition and size. He was the largest of the Roos and also seemed to be best temperament wise. He seemed to be a little less interested in proving "he's the man" than his counterparts. Also, when we introduced 10 Australorps that were 3 weeks younger than the Welsummers, he was A LOT...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I kept the biggest of our 7 Roos. He seemed to have a little less attitude than his 6 slightly smaller counterparts. I mean it's still obvious he's the boss bird but he is pretty laid back. Also, we introduced (10) 5 week old Australorps with our 8 week old Welsummers. He didn't have seem to...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My wife and I decided to start our on backyard flock and incubated a dozen Welsummer eggs. We hatched 11 and all are doing well. Unfortunately we ended up with 7 Roos out of the bunch. I separated out the 6 cockerels that are needing a new home today. They are 8 weeks old and doing great. Here...

Bloody wingtip on week old keet

Just to update, the reptile light is working great for our keets. They pretty well quit picking on the bloody wingtip as soon as I made the light change and it has completely healed now. This the bulb I purchased: And I did find this distance/heat output chart on the box to be pretty accurate:

Bloody wingtip on week old keet

Thanks for the reply. I went to PetSmart. They have reptile lights down to 25w. I purchased a 25w and 75w. The 75w is giving me a temp in the low 90's directly under it at 18".

Bloody wingtip on week old keet

I have been using a clear incandescent bulb for heat in their brooder. I did a little reading around and it sounds like switching to an red heat bulb tends to lessen their pecking on each other. I figured it was worth a shot. Look like to me that the color change alone tends to make the "sore"...

Bloody wingtip on week old keet

Hello all, I'm a new member from Central Texas. We found a nest of Guinea eggs out at our farm and decided to try and hatch them. A month later we have 6 beautiful keets. They are a week old now and doing well. Checked on them this morning and one of the keets has a bloody wing tip. Of course...
