Coon proofing a run and coop - what're your tricks

Great tips everyone. I dont have any interest in killing the coons, I can't say the same for my dogs though. Both of my dogs interact with the chickens, so them harming the birds is not an issue. I'm going to use washers and screws to secure the fencing, those barbed wire staples are a pain to...

Coon proofing a run and coop - what're your tricks

I'm getting ready to move, the location I am moving to has a very active raccoon population and a trash eating bear. I know the bear is always going to be a possible risk, but I can protect against the coons. Their run will be 8x8 with a raise coop thats 8x4, I only have 2 birds but this gives...

Washing sand for run- is it necessary??

Only time I've heard of washing sand was to remove the silt when using it in an aquarium. I dont think chickens care about silt though.

    Cock fighting behavior in chicks?

My EE will lower her head and ruff her hackles up when she's excited and flying all around. She's all pullet though.

What is your most clever coop/run idea?

I made a secure porch with a drop-down front gate that opened to the run for my ducks. On hot summer days my drake use to love lounging on his front porch. On days I wouldn't be home to watch them, or put them to bed I'd lock up their porch so they'd have fresh air and a little more room to walk...

    My dogs+my chicks=???

a good leave it, management, and some classical/counter conditioning should work in getting them to tolerate eachother. check out kikopups video on youtube for teaching leave it. I have a beagle mix who's very good with other animals, particularly baby animals. She mothered the emus we hatched...

I'm loving the 6-chick minimum at TSC!!

    Is she a goner?

Hate to say it but that kinda sounds like the one I lost this morning. I'd say dont give up hope as long as it doesn't look like it's suffering, but prepare yourself for the chance you may find it lifeless.

    One died

I've quickly learned chicken math. started with 2, one died, now have 3... A woman about 1.5 hours from me had about 30 ten day old pullets. After getting lost a few times the little unknown chick has 2 slightly larger girlfriends who seem healthy. One's a blue cochin and the other is an EE. Now...

    One died

The little red pullet died this morning, it never really acted right . It mostly slept and took it a while to catch on to eating and drinking even though it was a little older(had wing feathers) than the white chick. The white one, aside from being very lonely right now, is doing okay. S/he's...

    How much does wood cost????

Look for cull wood. It's wood that someone had cut and didn't want the scrap, depending on the length and type of wood you can walk away with a huge bargain. I built a decent tractor for under $40 and barely had to cut anything.

Post pictures of your baby chicks! :jumpy

Quote: No idea, the white one may be a deleware, the red one is anyones guess, came from a red pullet bin at TSC.

    What do they look like?

Picked these two up at TSC today. This one came from a red pullet bin, she doesn't know how to not make noise. I am guessing she's about a week old going by the feathers, both cam from a shipment that arrived this morning. This one came from an assortment bin. The only breed they had listed...
