How do I introduce chicks and move mama hen

Well I decided to keep her where she is at for now and watch them closely. I just popped the chicks under her. They were peeping up a storm (a little chilly too) but as soon as they were under her feathers they stopped screaming. Mama hen started clucking as soon as they were under her and she...

How do I introduce chicks and move mama hen

Yeah, it seems like keeping her where she is at this point might be good. The chicks are a week old (couldn't find younger ones). Hopefully they will accept each other because I want mama hen to stop brooding!

How do I introduce chicks and move mama hen

It would be awesome if mama could just protect her adopted chicks and they could all stay together. I guess that would be the best but I don't know... I do not have a rooster but mama is not "top hen" My nesting boxes (where she is brooding) are also up off the ground and there is a ramp. So I...

How do I introduce chicks and move mama hen

Ok so I am introducing three chicks to a broody hen. (her clutch failed and she is a first time mama) I just bought chicks and plan to introduce them tonight (nights are best). But I just realized that mama and chicks will need to be separated from the rest of the flock. Should I: a) move mama...

Help me with hatching these eggs!

I did the float test today, day 24. I did not see any obvious movement by my excited son was not allowing for a long completely still moment! I never did the candle test early on, I just didn't know. I tried doing the candle test today but could not see anything. So should I just give up on the...

Help me with hatching these eggs!

My brooding hen (who is also my son's "pet") started brooding about 27 days ago. And 24 days ago I put six fertilized eggs (not guaranteed just from a friend who has a rooster) under her. She has been a very dedicated mother! Once she did sit on the wrong nest but only for a couple hours at...

    Chickens and children

Thanks @Hanna8 Because my six chickens roam in a space that is over an acer in size now, the droppings are NOT at all concentrated! Also I have noticed that the droppings decompose VERY quickly around here! Within a week, what was a dropping among the leaves is just dirt, rich in nitrogen!

    Chickens and children

Thank you @Syl in Tucson I was feeling pretty bad! I was feeling like a bad mom! So I did lots of research and among the dangers in my kids life, chickens are WAY down on the list. They are more likely to get a disease at school than in the yard. And they are more likely to get sick from an...

    Chickens and children

The idea that I should l lock my kids in a playpen while my chickens roam free is hilarious! I believe in free range kids even more than I believe in free range chickens!

    Chickens and children

I was looking for an intelligent responds. Not ignorant judgment. It isn't like my kid is playing with the ****! Geez! I just have kids and chickens in the same area. I was looking for actual information about chicken diseases that are transmitable to humans. Please, if you can't have an...

    Chickens and children

My seven chickens free range throughout my 1/3 acer backyard during the day, so naturally there is poop here and there. Also, I have two young boys, one of which is crawling. So... How dangerous is it to have the baby in the yard? Could he get a disease? How likely? Wouldn't the chickens need to...
