What to do with mite infested bedding

Had a mite problem and cleaned out the bedding and scrubbed the coop. My wife wants me to take the bedding to the dump. I want to put it in a new garden bed that is on the other side of the house from the hens. They will not be able to access it. Will the mites survive without the hens?

    2nd molt?

This behaviour is quite different then when she has gone broody in the past (she goes broody a couple of times a year). She is up on her roost, not nesting like she normally does when she is broody. And other times she has never lost feathers while broody. Having said that, she was sitting on...

    Egg song...no egg

I've been hearing the egg song lately, first thing in the morning. My two hens are about 20-22 weeks old. This morning at 6 am the egg song was extremely loud. When I went out to look, my little red hen had escaped from the coop through a gap under the fence that she has never gone under before...

Nooooooooooo!! Well, thanks everyone for your feedback. I'm loving this new foray into urban farming and have become obsessed with hanging out with my girls (and now fella).

    Rooster?

These three hens I got at 8-10 weeks old two months ago. I was told they were two Australorps and a Red Cross. One of them has furry legs so I guess that means it's not an Australorp. In the last couple of weeks I have seen big changes in the tall one. (S)He is way bigger and now acting a little...
