I know what you mean, I used to think they were ugly ducks, but now I think they're prettying cute! And I do appreciate their lack of loud quacking. The other girls aren't too bad, but now and then they think they have to announce their views to the whole world.
Thanks, those are very helpful photos! I hadn't realized how different the caruncles were on
male and female, and the male's neck looks thicker too. How old are your ducks? All three
of ours look more like the females in your pictures.
I posted some pictures of them here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/919717/muscovy-ducklings-males-or-females/10
They are about 12 weeks old in those pictures, 3 Muscovy ducks and a Welsh Harlqeuin in the foreground, other ducks in back. they're still smaller than the Harlequins and...
When do male Muscovy ducks get bigger than other ducks? We have 3 Muscovy ducks, 15.5 weeks old, and they are all still smaller than our other ducks, all full grown, Welsh Harlequins and a Black Swede. If they're males, should they be bigger by now? We did have to clip their wings a couple of...
Durkey is a perfect name! We haven't named these yet, we don't want to have to re-name them if we guess the sex wrong. i have trouble enough remembering names as it is… It would be wonderful if they are all females.
No droopy wings with these three! They love to flap them and fly for short hops. I'm not sure what they weight, but if Harlequins are 5 - 6 pounds and Black Swedes 7 or 8, I don't think these guys are anywhere near 8 - 10 pounds. We're still new though, so feedback from people with more...
I've tried to tell whether their legs are closer together or farther apart but they keep moving them. Silly ducks won't hold still! Sometimes they stand with their legs far apart and other times they're tripping over their feet, all pigeon toed. It would be awesome if they were all girls! We use...
Muscovy duckling update - our ducklings are about 12 weeks old now, and we still don't know if they're male or female! They all seem to be about the same size, and we'd hoped that by this age we could see some difference in size. These are pictures from today - the 3 Muscovy babies and a 2 year...
I really like my Welsh Harlequins. They are beautiful, friendly, and quite calm for ducks. They outlay chickens, when you count eggs per year, and they can keep laying for longer than chickens. They do quack, but only when they're startled, or when there's a predator around, or when they're out...
Congratulations on finally reversing the duck/drake ratio! I hope we end up with more ducks than drakes with our three… Thanks for the input, it sounds as if we need more experience to figure out what sexes we have. I took some pictures and videos to my local poultry expert and he said he...
Thanks, that makes sense. Ok, I'll keep taking pictures. They're so cute anyway, it's not hard! I've enjoyed my Welsh Harlequins, but these Muscovy ducklings seem just loaded with personality.
Ours hatched mid-July, I think. They're nowhere near as big as your June hatched drake, but then they are younger. I suppose time will tell but waiting is not my favorite thing...
Thank you for your input! Could you tell me what you're seeing that makes you think the top one is duck and the others drakes? Any info on what I'm trying to see would be most helpful.
I do hear what I think is trilling, but I can't figure out which one or ones. Are they too young for...
