Jail Birds !
Banty hatchlings in my newly-built brooder. It has removable panels on 1 side, door and top that can be installed/removed as ambient temperature dictates. For cooler temps down in the barn I even add one more heat lamp. The heat lamps are on simple dimmer circuits I...
Howdy,
Enjoyed the pics. Maybe I need to come up with some of that plastic egg tray material your eggs are sitting on. I found with chicken eggs that just laying them on the screen turns into roller derby which doesn't seem too great for those trying to pip. I've read that using paper mache egg...
Welcome from Washington state ! I'm sure you'll find the group here not only friendly but full of experience and info. Enjoy your RIR's ! Mellow and good layers to boot.
I'm new to pheasants... but seem to remember reading somewhere you can supplement a lower protein (20%) food to something pheasants would need (30% ? ) but you don't want to go too high. I think the post said too high on the protein could cause growth (bone) problems ... at least, in chickens...
Thanks, folks, for the prompt replies. I'll take the advice to heart and stop by my farm store for the proper med. I was unaware of the need for worming... learn a bit more every day. I have a separate brooder, pen and run area for pheasants. I'm just starting with these birds, so my current...
Howdy, Pheasant experts,
My loca CoOp didn't have medicated game bird starter so I got the unmedicated stuff. I'm trying to find my notes on what to medicate the food with. Also, I'm assuming the medication period would be similar to that of chickens (16-18 weeks). I'm no fan of unnecessary...

Yep ! My first pheasant chick hatched 2 hours ago ! Whew ! My first successful pheasant hatch. He's 2 days early, but I've read a lot of folks say they get early birds now and then. Just noticed another one pipping. They're on day 22 (pheasants lock down @ day 21, hatch around 24). So...
Had a stone-deaf mixed breed female, Maggie, for 8 years. I found out she was really sensitive to vibration. So if she was looking away from me and I stomped really hard ( I'm 6 ft 1in @ 250 lb) she would spin around and then respond to my "come here" hand sign. I started giving her a treat when...
Our predator list has varied over the years. Used to be coyotes and feral dogs. So I built a stronger fence.
Then the chickens would fly out to graze and coyotes and owls got a lot of them. So I built a higher (9 ft) fence.
Then owls, red tail hawks and eagles (have actually SEEN these attacks)...
I have 27 ring neck eggs that just went into lock-down. Due to pop Tuesday 5/17 to Wed 5/18. My third try with pheasant eggs. Good luck with your hatch. I've learned a bit from two previous hatches of silkies, frizzles and even hatched two Seramas.... boy ! Are THEY cute !

Thanks, folks. I'll check the link.... and vaccinate my <6 month birds. After reading a bit on Mareks I went "holy cow... I should have been taking care of this ! ".
I'm continually humbled by the internet... been hatching out poultry on a small scale for 25 years and coccidiosis was about the...
While I don't see any symptoms among my 30+ birds, I've been reading a bit on Marek's disease. I now understand it's prudent to vaccinate day-old chicks. However, I currently have 17 birds that are 2 months old, 10 other chickens that range from 3 months to 6 years old, two geese (10 yr, 8 mo.)...
Howdy,
I live a mile from pavement ( oh, boy ! ) 10 miles out of Marysville ( which is 5 miles north of Everett ). Live on 5 wooded acres and, over the past 25 years, have learned a LOT about predator-proofing my flocks. I have game camera pics of coyotes, feral dogs and racoons stalking...
I've been "chicken-ing" for the past 25 years. All are/have been pets. Have names and SSN's (just kidding). We enjoy the fresh eggs but mostly the individual personalities and antics. Currenty have a mixed flock of reds, barred rocks, aracanas, gold laced-wing and variety of banties. Just (2...
